Campi Flegrei, new shock of magnitude 4.0: the seismic swarm continues to make the area tremble

Was clearly felt by the population of Pozzuoli, Bagnoli and in different neighborhoods of Naples The earthquake that occurred on the morning of July 18, 2025. The earthquake, recorded at 9:14 am, reached one MD 4.0 magnitude with a hypocenter at about 2.5 km deep, located in the water mirror in front of the Pozzuoli coast, according to what was communicated by theNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv).

Although there are no damage to people or things, the event had an immediate impact on daily life. As a precaution, the railway circulation in the node of Naples and along the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines was suspended to allow technical checks, as reported by Trenitalia and from theEAVregional public transport company.

The shock is part of a context already monitored carefully: in fact, a seismic swarm is underway that has seen a dozen seismic events concentrated in the same area in the following hours. Among these, two further shocks of magnitude 1.5 were recorded almost simultaneously at 9:36 am and 9:37, with an epicenter always in the municipality of Pozzuoli.

The seismic activity of the Campi Flegrei is not new, but in recent months it has assumed a frequency and intensity such as to grow the concern between the population and local institutions. The earthquake of 30 June last, of magnitude 4.6, and that of March 13, with the same intensity, represent the strongest episodes of the last 40 years in the area.

“The Flegrei fields are an active and complex volcanic system, where the phenomenon of bradyseismthat is, the lifting or lowering of the soil is an important indicator of the ongoing activity “, reads the bulletins of theVesuvian Observatory.

Bradisism, which can cause damage even in the absence of eruptions, is in fact one of the most feared elements in the Phlegraean camps, where the raising of the soil is measured in centimeters a year and can drastically change geology and urban safety. According to the Ingv experts, in recent months a Increase in the frequency and energy of seismic eventswhich requires constant surveillance and updated civil protection plans.

Local authorities, together with civil protection and scientific bodies, continue to monitor the evolution of seismic swarm, reiterating that at the moment there are no precursors of a imminent eruption, but that preparation and information remains fundamental.

For citizens, the recommendation is to rely exclusively on official sources for updates and follow the indications of the authorities in the event of new events.
