At just 12 years old invents a solar energy blanket for the homeless (and is rewarded by Time among the girls of the year)

At just 12 years old, the Scottish Rebecca Young has transformed an idea born among the school desks into an invention capable of making the difference for those who live in difficult conditions. Kelvinside Academy pupil of Glasgow, he conceived a heated solar energy blanket to help homeless people face rigid winter nights.

How the thermal blanket works

It all started when Rebecca observed the harsh reality of those who sleep on the street, often without any protection from the cold. From there the desire to design something practical and sustainable was born. He thought of a blanket that could accumulate energy during the day and release it at night, guaranteeing up to eight hours of heat, in line with the natural sleep cycle.

The blanket works via solar panels connected to a battery package, while the control circuit allows you to optimize consumption by lighting and automatically turning off the heat. The project was initially presented at the Primary Engineer Macrobert Medal competition, which involved over 70,000 students in the United Kingdom.

From drawing to the prototype

Rebecca’s idea also won the Silver Medal and the Commendation Meda initially presented to a school competition and captured the attention of Thales, an engineering company that transformed the design into a real prototype.

The first 35 units were donated to Homeless Project Scotland, immediately demonstrating the validity of the initiative. Some technical details, such as the automatic temperature adjustment system, make the device not only innovative but also efficient.

International recognition

The invention led Rebecca to win prizes in the Primary Engineer competition, where she passed tens of thousands of candidates. But the most surprising recognition came from Time magazinewhich inserted it among its “Girls of the Year”, alongside other young innovatives from all over the world.

As part of the prize, Rebecca has been transformed even into a mini-family Lego, a symbol of the link between creativity and real impact. Despite the successes in the technical field, the young Scottish dreams of becoming a musician as a big one. Meanwhile, his invention continues to bring comfort and warmth to those who need it most, showing how technology, together with empathy, can change people’s lives.
