Bleeding the radiators, the simple gesture that saves you money without spending a cent

With the arrival of the first cold weather, many turn the heating back on without thinking too much. Yet, a simple and often overlooked action can make a big difference to comfort and consumption: bleeding radiators. A few minutes are enough to eliminate the air that accumulates in the circuits and prevents the hot water from circulating correctly. The result? Cold radiators at the top, annoying noises and increasing consumption.

As Energuide explains, the presence of air creates bubbles that hinder the correct functioning of the system. In old systems, sludge also forms caused by internal corrosion of the pipes: these residues slow down heating and increase consumption. In practice, bleeding radiators is like cleaning the arteries of your heating system: a small intervention that significantly improves its performance.

How to bleed radiators correctly

Every year, when the temperature in the house drops below 13°C, before turning on the gas boiler, I always carry out this simple operation: I bleed my five water radiators. In a few minutes, the system is back to working perfectly. Here’s how to do it, step by step:

  1. Turn off the boiler and wait until the radiators are completely cold.
  2. Start with the radiator furthest from the boiler and work towards the closest one.
  3. Get multiple tongs, a cloth and a container to collect the water.
  4. Slowly open the vent valve, usually located at the top, on the side opposite the thermostatic valve.
  5. Let the air out until a continuous stream of water appears.
  6. Close the valve as soon as the water is flowing steadily.
  7. Check the water pressure on the boiler: if it has dropped, add water until it reaches the green area of the pressure gauge.
  8. While you’re at it, dust your radiators: dust reduces the effectiveness of the heating because it retains heat.

Bleeding your radiators at the beginning of autumn is the best way to avoid breakdowns or malfunctions when the cold becomes more intense. It takes just a few minutes, zero costs and the benefit is immediate.

All the advantages of annual cleaning

Bleeding the radiators once a year allows you to optimize heating performance, improve heat distribution and reduce gas consumption. After carrying out the maintenance, I immediately noticed evenly warm radiators, no annoying noises and a more welcoming environment.

With the increase in energy prices, this simple gesture proves to be even more useful: it costs nothing, but allows you to save significantly on your bill. Furthermore, the boiler works more efficiently and lasts longer.

In short, once you get into the habit of doing it every year, you can no longer do without it, a bit like the first coffee in the morning when it’s cold outside!
