Wood stove maintenance: what you need to know before turning it back on

The enveloping heat of a wood stove is definitely one of the most popular forms of heating in Italian homes. But to fully enjoy the warmth of the home and keep the system safe and efficient, attention must be paid to maintenance. The 2025 regulations have strengthened control obligations, making it even more important to know all aspects of caring for your system.

Ordinary cleaning: the basis of efficiency

Removing the ash is the fundamental operation for the good functioning of the stove. Contrary to what you might think, there is no need to completely empty the drawer every day, given that a layer of ash at the bottom improves combustion, acting as a natural insulator and reflecting the heat upwards. This measure also protects the internal walls from direct wear and tear from the embers. To remove ash safely, you should always wait until the stove is completely cold. A metal bucket is certainly essential, since the embers can remain lit under the ash for up to 48 hours. Those who use quality wood can reuse the ash as a natural fertilizer for vegetable gardens and gardens, thanks to the high potassium content which enriches the soil.

The door glass requires special care. Cleaning does not only respond to aesthetic needs: keeping the glass clean means preserving the integrity of the gaskets which guarantee the watertightness of the combustion chamber. An effective method is to use the same cold ash, rubbed gently with a damp cloth or newspaper. For more resistant encrustations, use a scraper, acting delicately: you will solve the problem without damaging the surface.

The invisible enemy: creosote

Creosote represents the main danger for those who own a wood stove. It is a tarry substance that derives from the incomplete distillation of wood and which forms when the temperature in the flue drops below 150°C. To prevent its accumulation, the stove should work at high speed for prolonged periods, avoiding slow and prolonged combustion with damp or resinous wood.

Stoves made of refractory material require particular attention. At least once a year they should be opened to clean the internal smoke passages, where creosote can accumulate insidiously. Resinous wood accelerates this process, creating encrustations that are difficult to remove without risking costly damage to the system.

Periodic checks and critical components

Door seals deserve regular inspection, because when they lose their elasticity to the touch, they have reached the end of their useful life, generally between one and three years. A vitrified gasket compromises the airtightness of the stove, reducing efficiency and increasing consumption.

In cast iron stoves, the refractory mastic that seals the various parts can deteriorate over time: small cracks and crumblings can create leaks in the watertight seal, compromising combustion control. An easy test is to completely close the air register: if the flame continues to burn brightly, there will probably be some leaks that need to be corrected.

The smoke diverter must be dismantled and checked periodically. The high temperatures to which internal components are subjected can cause deformation, corrosion or accumulation of deposits. A wire brush helps with cleaning, but you must proceed delicately to avoid damage to the refractory materials.

The legislation: obligations and deadlines

legislation

Recent legislative provisions have made controls on wood stoves even more stringent. Presidential Decree 74/2013, later confirmed by the latest regulatory changes, establishes that all heating systems must be checked at least once a year. For biomass stoves, professional cleaning of the chimney becomes mandatory every 12 months, or sooner if more than 4 tons of biomass burned are exceeded.

With regional resolution 4767 of July 2025, the Lombardy region introduced the obligation for chimney sweeps to register their maintenance activities in the CURIT system. Penalties for non-compliance vary from 500 to 5,000 euros, depending on the severity of the violation.

For systems with a power exceeding 15 kW, checks must take place annually. For those between 10 and 15 kW, the frequency becomes every two years, unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer or qualified technician. The responsibility always falls on the owner of the apartment, while for condominium flues the obligation lies with the administration.

Professional maintenance: when to call the technician

In addition to the ordinary cleaning that every owner can carry out, extraordinary maintenance requires the intervention of qualified personnel. The certified technician must issue the maintenance report, a mandatory document to demonstrate the system’s compliance with current regulations.

maintenance

During the professional intervention, the technician will check the integrity of all the components, from the brazier to the seals, from the flue to the ventilation system. Combustion control allows you to optimize the air flow and improve energy performance and the set of professional interventions allows you to prevent situations with the highest risk rate, such as fires due to soot and infamous fires. carbon monoxide poisoning.
