A microscopic figure, of course, but enough to put any technological system that needs surgical precision into difficulty. And when it comes to space missions, satellites, communications and navigation, precision is not a whim: it’s oxygen.

This gap arises directly from the severe, almost ruthless rules that govern the Universe. Einstein encoded them with his own general relativityand now two NIST researchers, Neil Ashby and Bijunath Patla, have applied them to Mars to calculate, with painstaking patience, how quickly time passes on a planet that is not ours.

A time that accelerates and slows down

To understand why the weather on Mars “wallows” in its own personal acceleration, we must start from a simple truth: time is not the same everywhere. It is elastic, malleable, sometimes almost capricious. It depends on how much gravity is crushing you and how fast you are moving through space.

This is where things get interesting. On Mars there gravity is five times weaker compared to the Earth. And when the weight of the Universe presses less on you, the internal clock of the Universe – that invisible metronome that marks reality – speeds up a little. Not only that: Mars orbits further from the Sun, follows its trajectory with a lower speed but with a greater eccentricity, therefore it approaches and moves away from the star more markedly than the Earth. And this continuous approaching-distancing changes the speed with which time passes.

Ashby and Patla considered everything: the gravity of the Sun, that of the Earth, even that of Moonwho, as a good supporting actress, never misses an opportunity to complicate life. A three-body problem is already a headache for those who study physics; with four, it becomes a cosmic sudoku.

The result is this: on average, Martian days run 477 microseconds faster than oursbut the difference can fluctuate up to ±226 microseconds depending on the position of the planets in their orbit. It’s not enough to make Matt Damon look younger The Martianbut it’s enough to drive a 5G satellite crazy that needs to maintain high timing precision.

Microseconds that can create chaos

For us humans, those microseconds slip through our fingers without even noticing, but for a communication system they are enormities. Technologies like the 5G require an accuracy of a few tenths of a microsecond. So imagine what happens when two planets millions of kilometers apart “mark time” differently.

In a not too distant future – one in which we imagine rovers coming and going like scooters in the city, fleets of satellites in Martian orbit and perhaps even small colonies – we will not be able to ignore the problem. Synchronization between Earth and Mars will become a structural necessity. The same researchers had already studied the time difference between Earth and Moon: lunar clocks run 56 microseconds faster than ours.
