The scene is not what one expects when it comes to innovation: no futuristic laboratories, no team of researchers in lab coats. Just a home kitchen, a cold floor and condensation sliding down the tiles. That’s where Jia Mingxuanjust turned fourteen, imagined something that is making the world talk today. A simple idea, almost disarming in its immediacy, but so powerful that it won the gold medal iniENA 2025 in Nurembergone of the most important international exhibitions dedicated to inventions.
The young man lives in Inner Mongolia, a land marked by wind and drought, where trees trying to grow must brave a hostile climate every single day. As he saw the young shrubs struggling to survive, he understood that none of those battles were theoretical: it was his land that was suffering, his landscape that was changing. From that stubborn thought his device against drought was born, built without any pretense of spectacularity, only with steel pipes And recycled plastic bottles. A system that exploits the natural temperature difference between surface and subsoil to capture humidity from the air and transform it into water available for the roots.
The image of him traveling thirty kilometers at dawn to check the prototype hidden two meters underground has something poetic and at the same time concrete. Not the enthusiasm of those who want to amaze, but the stubbornness of those who truly believe they can change something, even just within a few meters. Every day he checked the degree of moisture in the soil, noted the results, adjusted details, improved what could be improved. And that plastic and metal “toy”, born almost by chance, has become a small ally of the trees that struggle to survive in arid areas.

A cutting-edge project
When the project came to Nurembergamong more than five hundred inventions, was certainly not the most eye-catching. Yet, in its essentiality, it contained a promise that today weighs more than any special effect: allowing a young tree not to die of thirst. On a thirsty planet, it is a value that does not need high-sounding words.
What is striking, more than the ingenuity, is the spontaneity with which it all began. A kitchen, a boy, a drop of condensing water. The look of a teenager who, instead of getting used to seeing trees dying, decides to try to save them. Today Jia Mingxuan works together with a group of Chinese researchers to perfect his system. He doesn’t dream of prizes or recognition: he wants that idea to work everywhere, that it can be easily reproduced and become an additional tool in the fight against desertification.

If he succeeds, the credit will also go to that kitchen, that wet floor and a boy who had the courage to observe what everyone sees, but which almost no one really looks at.
