There are places capable of blurring the boundary between imagination and reality. Riquewihr, a small village in Alsace, is one of these: walking through its streets means entering a world that seems hand-drawn, made up of half-timbered houses, pastel colors and details cared for to the point of obsession. It is no coincidence that it was here that Disney artists found inspiration for Belle’s village in the film Beauty and the Beast. The feeling we felt when visiting it during the Christmas holidays – when everything in Alsace is even more magical with the richly decorated themed houses – is that of walking inside a medieval fairy tale that has remained intact over the centuries.
A medieval jewel in the heart of Alsace
With just over 1,200 inhabitants, Riquewihr is located in the Haut-Rhin department, a short distance from Colmar, between the German border and the Vosges mountains. Inserted in the list of The Most Beautiful Villages in France, the village is surrounded by hills covered with vineyards, along the famous Alsace Wine Route. Its fortified walls and defensive towers tell of a past marked by trade, sieges and rural life, while the exceptional state of conservation restores an authentic atmosphere suspended in time.

Stroll among half-timbered houses and hidden details
The heart of Riquewihr is Rue du Général-de-Gaulle, the main street that crosses the village from side to side. Here the iconic half-timbered houses of the 15th and 16th centuries overlook, all different in height, colors and decorations. Wrought iron signs, bay windows, wells flowered during spring and summer and fountains accompany the visitor on a slow walk, made of continuous discoveries. Many historic buildings now house pastry shops, artisan shops and wine cellars, where you can taste the famous Alsatian Riesling.

Towers, walls and stories of a restless past
Among the most recognizable symbols stands out the Dolder, an ancient 13th century tower 25 meters high, which marked the entrance to the village. Its double soul – picturesque towards the center, austere towards the outside – perfectly explains Riquewihr’s defensive function. Not far away is the Tour des Voleurs, once a prison, now a museum: inside you can visit cells, interrogation rooms and environments that provide a crude cross-section of medieval justice. To complete the defensive system, clearly visible sections of the fortified walls remain, which embrace the entire village.

Legends, witches and timeless suggestions
Riquewihr lives not only on documented history, but also on popular legends. Emblematic is the Maison des Légendes, known as the House of Witches, where mysterious figures observe passers-by from the windows. According to tradition, a solitary woman saved the village during a siege, becoming a symbol of protection and luck. Even today, decorative witches are considered good luck and are part of the local identity.
A Christmas that lasts all year
As mentioned, one of the most surprising aspects of Riquewihr is his ability to experience Christmas in every season. The Féerie de Noël shop offers a real permanent Christmas village, with decorations, lights and installations that recall the winter atmosphere even in the height of summer. In the cold months, however, the village reaches its maximum splendor: the Christmas markets, the lights and the scent of spices transform the streets into a living nativity scene, attracting visitors from all over Europe.

Alsatian flavors and pleasures of the table
A visit to Riquewihr is not complete without tasting traditional Alsatian cuisine. In the bistros of the center you can find iconic dishes such as tarte flambée, thin and crunchy, and choucroute, rich and substantial. Simple but intense flavors, perfect to complete an experience that involves all the senses.
