Batman storms a city council in California to protest against ICE: “stop the masked men who kill”

During a public session of the Santa Clara, California city council, the protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took an unusual yet effective form as it went viral. A man masked as Batman spoke in front of the councilors, transforming an institutional moment into a scene that quickly circulated on social media.

It all started with the fact that the city of Santa Clara will host Super Bowl 60 at Levi’s Stadium in February, an event that involves a massive security plan coordinated with federal authorities. These include ICE, whose presence has sparked strong criticism from activists and residents, concerned about the possible consequences on immigrant communities.

Harsh accusations and tones

The man, whose identity remains unknown, introduced himself simply as “Batman”, wearing a cape and mask. His speech, broadcast live on the Municipality’s institutional YouTube channel, was direct and aggressive from the start. Addressing advisers, he took issue with the collaboration with ICE, accusing the administration of not doing enough to limit the federal agency’s involvement.

In his speech, the protester argued that allowing ICE to operate during the Super Bowl would expose residents to risk and abuse, referring to operations conducted by often masked agents. He called council members “cowards” and “traitors” if they did not actively oppose cooperation with the federal government, calling on them to use every political tool available to protect the local population.

These are the words addressed to the council:

“I’m here because masked men are killing our citizens. And those masked men aren’t me: they’re ICE. I’m not here to beg you to do anything. I’m asking you to act with an ounce of backbone. You allowed federal agents to terrorize our community under the guise of Super Bowl security. You are a junta of cowards. You are a junta of traitors. While you sit here in your comfortable chairs, people are being torn from their families and dying in the streets. This is not a request, is a warning: if you continue to cooperate with ICE, if you continue to allow these masked men to operate in our city, the blood of every single citizen they take will be on your hands. Do your job. Protect this city.”

Growing tension against ICE

In Santa Clara, as in many US cities, any citizen can sign up to speak for a few minutes during city council meetings. The use of the superhero costume transformed a political protest into a symbolic gesture, designed to attract attention and amplify the message against federal immigration policies. The episode is part of a climate of growing tension around the role of ICE in high-profile public events. If on the one hand the authorities defend cooperation as necessary for security, on the other all this is putting human rights and lives at risk as unfortunately has already happened.
