New food alert concerning 11 types of Colella brand kibble for dogs and cats, for which contamination by non-compliant animal by-products (SOA) is suspected.
SOA are parts of animals that are not intended for human consumption, but which can be used in pet food. They may include, for example, rinds, bones, skin and fish viscera. The use of these ingredients is legal and regulated by the European Union, but can pose risks if the by-products are not properly treated or stored, as they can become a vehicle for bacteria or contaminants, and cause digestive problems or infections in dogs and cats.
The recall, reported by the Ministry of Health, is classified as a microbiological risk, and concerns 135 batches, for an estimated total of approximately 4 million meals (3 million for dogs and 1 million for cats).
