Mismatched Socks Day: stories, nursery rhymes and songs for children (and beyond) that celebrate inclusion

February 6 is Mismatched Socks Day, which has been celebrated in Italy for over a decade. And this is not a fashion-related initiative, but rather a tribute to the beauty of diversity. In fact, mismatched socks are synonymous with creativity and generate joy. Everyone must have worn them by mistake, while in a hurry, or because one of the two socks had magically disappeared into thin air. What better day than today to show them off with pride?

The idea of the day dedicated to mismatched socks was born 15 years ago in a primary school in Terzo di Aquileia, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, thanks to a teacher called Sabrina, but eight years ago the initiative landed on social media. To join the initiative, simply wear mismatched socks, perhaps one with stripes and the other with polka dots, and publish the photo – accompanied by the hashtag #calzinispaiati2026, on your social channels or on the page dedicated to the event.

The initiative proved to be a great success not only among school children encouraged by many teachers, but also among adults who chose to proudly show off their different socks for example when going to the office. But did you know that nursery rhymes, stories and songs have also been dedicated to mismatched socks?
