I went to Grazzano Visconti, the Emilian village that seems to have come out of the Harry Potter books (complete with a Haunted Emporium)

For Harry Potter fans like me there is no need to go all the way to London to relive that atmosphere described in JK Rowling’s books and in the boy wizard films. In fact, there is an Emilian village just over an hour from Milan that made me feel like I was crossing platform 9¾ and it’s called Grazzano Visconti. I had been hearing about it for years until I decided it was time to go and see it for myself and here we are.

At first glance it seems like we are immersed in the Middle Ages, but be careful because this is not the case. It is in fact a fascinating and well-made historical fake, rebuilt in the early twentieth century around a real castle. The effect, however, is surprising: here time has not stopped, it has transformed.

The Castle with the ghost of Heloise

The heart of the village is the Grazzano Visconti Castle, built in the fourteenth century and then remodeled over the centuries. Imposing towers, drawbridges, internal courtyard: just cross the entrance to feel like students waiting for the sorting ceremony. The visit is guided and must be booked, but it is worth it. The interiors tell stories of noble families, period furnishings, heraldic coats of arms.

And then there is the legend of the ghost of Heloise, a romantic presence that hovers between the rooms, perfect for those who love gothic stories. Outside is the Castle Park, a tangle of paths, statues, centuries-old trees and a small labyrinth. Walking in there, with the light filtering through the branches, is an experience that has something cinematic about it.

Magical shops and Hogsmeade atmospheres

But it is while walking through the cobbled streets that the magic takes shape. The center develops in a horseshoe shape around the castle: wooden balconies, wrought iron signs, decorative details that seem like scenography with attention to detail.

Among the artisan workshops – wood, iron, ceramics – the Emporio Stregato shop stands out, a small paradise for those who, like me, have never stopped believing in magic and for the little ones. Here you can find everything related to the boy wizard franchise: wands, cloaks, objects inspired by the world of Harry Potter, sweets that recall the famous Chocolate Frogs. Entering it (and arm yourself with patience because there is always a queue) is like crossing the threshold of Diagon Alley: it is impossible not to be fascinated or rather bewitched. It is not for nothing that it is one of the most famous Pottery-themed shops in the world.

Museums, churches and unexpected details

Grazzano Visconti is not just fantasy suggestion. I also visited the Wax Museum, with surprisingly realistic statues, and the Torture Museum, small but well-kept, which adds a darker note to the route. Not far away, the Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano shows a more sober and authentic face, with artistic traces that tell centuries of history.

Events all year round

The village is free to enter, and this allows you to experience it slowly, without rushing. You can sit in the main square, observe the details of the facades, listen to the footsteps on the cobblestones. Fantasy-themed events, historical re-enactments and events inspired by the world of magic are organized throughout the year. In summer, concerts are held in the castle gardens which make the atmosphere even more evocative. In winter, the Christmas markets transform the village into a small enchanted village.

For me, who grew up with Harry Potter, this visit was more than just a trip out of town. It was a way to rediscover that part of me that still gets excited in front of a castle, that searches for symbols hidden among the stones, that believes in the power of stories. Grazzano Visconti is not Hogwarts. But for a few hours, walking among its towers and shops, I had the feeling that the magic was real. And sometimes this is enough to make a trip unforgettable.
