The era of Outlander ends: everything you need to know about season 8 of the series that made us travel through time

Twelve years after the first episode, the series that brought millions of viewers between the Scottish hills and the American battlefields is drawing to a close. “Outlander” returns with the eighth and final season: the debut took place in the United States on March 6, 2026, on the Starz platform, while in Italy the broadcast will begin on March 14 on Sky.

Ten episodes to close

The eighth season is made up of ten episodes, a smaller number than the previous season of sixteen episodes divided into two parts – a choice that suggests a more compact and intense story. The episodes will be available weekly on the NOW platform, as well as on demand on Sky.

The world premiere was held on March 2 in New York, at the Alice Tully Hall of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan were present on the red carpet along with much of the cast and production, in what was described as the symbolic end of a television era that lasted over ten years.

Where we were

By season seven, the Frasers had found themselves in the heart of the American Revolution. Events ended with Jamie’s decision to return to Claire, while the MacKenzies were grappling with the difficult choice of where to build a new house.

The eighth season picks up from there: Jamie finally brings Claire back to Fraser’s Ridge, where the two readjust to community life and discover the changes that have occurred during their absence. The Frasers’ love will be tested by the progress of the war, by family secrets and by the weight of choices that could change their destiny forever.

A phenomenon that does not end with the series

Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the series has sold approximately 50 million copies worldwide, with all nine volumes of the saga becoming New York Times bestsellers. The conclusion of the main series does not close the narrative universe, which will continue with “Outlander: Blood of My Blood”, a prequel already in development dedicated to the stories of Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp’s parents.

Even on the literary side, anticipation is growing, because the tenth novel of the saga, entitled “A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out”, has been announced, despite not yet having a release date – the last volume published in Italy, “When it happens tell the bees”, dates back to 2022. In the meantime, fans have at least one certainty: for the theme song of the last season, Annie Lennox recorded a new interpretation of the Scottish folk classic “The Skye Boat Song”. A farewell that, already like this, promises not to go unnoticed.
