Yet another accident involving a tram has shaken the eastern area of Rome, after numerous episodes in Milan. Shortly before 8am, along via Prenestina, two trams collided with each other at via Erasmo Gattamelata, in the Pigneto neighbourhood, causing injuries to several passengers and prompting the immediate mobilization of emergency services.
The impact involved trains of lines 5 and 19, which travel daily on one of the busiest routes of Roman public transport. There were numerous commuters on board the vehicles heading to work or school when the sudden collision occurred.
Ten injured and immediate rescue intervention
The alarm went off immediately after the accident. The 118 ambulances quickly arrived on site, together with the patrols of the V Prenestino Group of the Local Police. Rescuers provided assistance to the passengers involved, around ten people who were injured and subsequently transported to area hospitals for checks and treatment.
According to initial information, none of the injured were in serious condition, but the fear among the travelers was considerable. The officers took steps to secure the area, temporarily isolating the tram station to allow the necessary rescue operations and investigations.
Investigations underway into the dynamics of the accident
At the moment the precise causes of the collision still remain to be clarified. Local police officers are carrying out investigations to reconstruct the dynamics of the collision and verify any responsibilities. The most immediate hypothesis concerns a contact between the two convoys during the march, but the technical findings and the testimonies of those present will establish precisely what happened in those moments.
Public transport slowed down but service restored
The accident caused inevitable disruption to mobility in the area. For a few hours, tram circulation on the Prenestina was limited, with repercussions on lines 5, 14 and 19, widely used by residents of the eastern districts of the capital.
During the partial suspension of the service, the affected section was covered with replacement buses, while the technicians who intervened on site worked to quickly free the line and check the status of the convoys. According to what was communicated by Atac, the situation returned to normal around 9.30, when tram circulation was completely restored.
