The referendum on justice reform sparks participation and surprises analysts and parties: at the close of the first day the turnout figure was close to 46%, a level that exceeds most similar consultations with voting over two days. The polls will remain open today until 3pm and for this reason the projections indicate a possible participation close to 60%, a scenario that would transform the consultation into a political test of great importance.
The North leads, the South remains colder
The territorial analysis shows a strong push from the Central-Northern regions. Emilia-Romagna is in the lead, exceeding 53%, followed by other areas with high participation such as Lombardy and Tuscany. Even in the large cities of the North and in medium-large municipalities there is a significant presence at the polls.
The picture changes moving down towards the South, where turnout remains more limited: Sicily stops at around 35%, confirming a clear geographical gap. Even in the urban suburbs, participation appears lower than in the central and more educated neighborhoods.
Cross-sectional numbers and no clear trend
Experts speak of a transversal turnout which does not automatically favor either the Yes or No front. The data shows a mobilization both in areas politically oriented to the left and in those traditionally close to the centre-right. In municipalities with more graduates, participation grows significantly, but the vote remains distributed without clear direction.
A vote that weighs politically
With such a high participation, the referendum will undoubtedly take on a dimension that goes beyond the technical question. A large turnout indicates that voters perceive the consultation as a relevant political step, capable of influencing future balances and strategies. The widespread mobilization, especially in the North but present throughout the country, suggests a game that is still open. The last day of voting will be decisive in understanding whether the boom in participation will consolidate and which direction the final result will take.
