A food recall published on March 26 on the Ministry of Health portal concerns a batch of Sea Master brand marinated yellowfin tuna, the reason for which is the presence of histamine exceeding the legal limits, ascertained by analyzes carried out after distribution of the product.
The product and batch affected
The tuna is produced by the Mar Grande Srl company in the factory in via Carapelle 3 in Pulsano, in the province of Taranto – EU identification mark ITU2K3S – on behalf of Sea Master Srl. It arrives at wholesalers in 2-3 kg vacuum-packed slices, even if it is sold exclusively loose to the final consumer at the fishmonger’s counter, without a visible label. The lot to check is no. 20261018625, expiring on March 27, 2026.
The recall was ordered as a precaution by the manufacturer itself, which initiated the recall after receiving the results of post-sales analyses.
Because histamine is dangerous
Histamine accumulates in fish of the family Scombridae — tuna, mackerel, anchovies — when the cold chain is interrupted during processing or transport. The substance is not eliminated by cooking and does not necessarily alter the smell or appearance, therefore, a contaminated slice may appear completely intact.
Scombroid intoxication generally manifests itself within a few minutes of ingestion with redness of the face and neck, hives, sensation of heat, nausea and abdominal cramps. Symptoms are reversible but can be intense, especially in people who are already sensitive.
Anyone who has recently purchased marinated tuna at the fish counter is invited to check the origin of the product with the point of sale. If it matches the reported lot, it must not be consumed and must be returned to the store for a refund.
