Mercury above limits in swordfish: do not consume this product frozen (brand and lot)

A new food alert brings attention to one of the most feared contaminants when it comes to fish, mercury. In the section dedicated to consumer warnings, the Ministry of Health reported the withdrawal of a batch of frozen swordfish under the Surgelati Italpesca brand, due to mercury levels exceeding the limits permitted by current legislation.

This is a contamination that should not be underestimated. Mercury, in fact, is a heavy metal that can accumulate in the body and cause negative effects, especially on the nervous system. The risks increase for some more vulnerable categories, such as pregnant women, children and particularly sensitive people, for whom exposure can have more significant consequences.

The product concerned was manufactured by the Italpesca sas company in the factory located in Acerra, in the province of Naples. As always in these cases, the authorities’ recommendation is clear and leaves no room for interpretation: the product must not be consumed.

Swordfish are known to be one of the species most prone to mercury accumulation, due to their position in the marine food chain. Precisely for this reason, European regulations establish strict limits for its presence in foods, limits which in this case have been exceeded.
