When you think of the equipment of a professional football team, donkeys hardly come to mind. Yet this is precisely what is happening thanks to a curious initiative involving Arsenal, fresh champions of England, and the Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norfolk.
The London club has in fact donated around forty pairs of no longer used play socks to the center which deals with the recovery and care of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. An apparently unusual gesture that turned out to be extremely useful for animal welfare.
Why footballers’ socks are so precious
Modern socks used by professionals are often designed without the foot part, a feature that makes them perfect for many veterinary uses. In the sanctuary, socks are used as protection for sensitive paws, to keep veterinary bandages in place and above all to defend the animals from insect attacks during the warmer months.
In fact, summer represents a delicate period for many donkeys hosted by the facility. Flies tend to concentrate on their legs causing irritation, scabs and infections which can become particularly painful. Thanks to the elastic fabrics donated by Arsenal, operators are able to create an effective and comfortable protective barrier.
Concrete help for over 1,500 animals
Redwings is not just any reality. In fact, the organization manages over 1,500 animals, including horses, ponies, donkeys and mules, and more than a thousand live under its direct responsibility every day. In a similar context, every reusable material can make a difference.
Socks are also used to avoid chafing caused by collars and harnesses, as well as facilitating some grooming and limb care operations. According to those responsible for the sanctuary, this is one of the most original donations received in recent years, but also one of the most practical.
Sustainability and attention to waste
The idea was born within the London club as part of the initiatives dedicated to reducing waste. In a long and intense season, a professional team can consume hundreds of pairs of socks which, although no longer suitable for competition, are still perfectly usable for other purposes.
Arsenal played over sixty matches in the last year, culminating in winning the Premier League and reaching the UEFA Champions League final. Numbers that translate into a significant quantity of technical material normally destined for disposal.
Donkeys become Gunners fans
The initiative had such a positive impact that the sanctuary wanted to publicly thank the club through photos and videos showing the donkeys wearing Arsenal’s distinctive red socks. The images quickly won over football fans and animal lovers. A concrete example of how an object apparently destined to become waste can instead be transformed into a precious resource for those who really need it.
