The icy waters of Northern Europe are changing their face, transforming themselves into the stage of an epochal biological colonization. The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), traditionally associated with the mild climates of the Mediterranean, is experiencing an extraordinary demographic proliferation that has redefined the faunal map of the United Kingdom.
Initially reported in 2025 along the southern coasts of Cornwall and Devon, this biological wave quickly moved upstream, extending to the seabed of Wales and Scotland. Bryce Stewart, lead author of the research and senior scientist at the Marine Biological Association, confirmed to the newspaper The Guardian that this is the most impressive cephalopod boom ever recorded in this geographical area, a phenomenon documented thanks to underwater surveys and constant reports from divers and snorkelers.
The climatic factors behind the great migration
The reasons for this anomalous reproductive wave lie in a precise combination of thermal anomalies linked to climate change. An exceptionally mild winter, followed by a spring with warm temperatures, brought down the mortality rates of the young, creating the perfect conditions for the development of the species. The progressive thermal rise of marine waters has made the British seas a hospitable environment, accelerating the life cycle of molluscs.
This ecological upheaval, defined by experts as a real shock to historical balances, is radically modifying the marine food chain. If on the one hand octopuses decimate local fish and molluscs, on the other they have become a precious source of sustenance for native predators such as seals, large eels and rare Risso’s dolphins.
The economic impact between collapses and record fish markets
The massive presence of these intelligent invertebrates is splitting the local fishing sector in two, generating winners and losers. Fishermen historically specialized in catching crabs and lobsters find themselves in a dramatic situation, as octopuses directly attack the pots to devour the trapped crustaceans, pushing some operators to sell their boats.
On the other hand, those who converted their nets recorded a miraculous season: in 2025 the volume of octopus catches increased by 7,700%. A trend confirmed by the Brixham fish market, in Devon, which established an absolute commercial record by exchanging as many as one hundred tonnes of specimens in a single day, demonstrating a coastal economy forced to adapt to the tropicalisation of the ocean.
