Too hot? Even the brain goes haywire: high temperatures affect our mental health (more than you imagine)

When the mercury column rises above warning levels, our mind experiences a real structural overload. Neuroscientist Kimberly Meidenbauer compares the central nervous system to an overheated computer: to avoid permanent damage, the organism activates an emergency biological protocol.

The brain, which although accounting for only two percent of the total body mass requires as much as a fifth of the body’s total energy, must give physiological priority to survival mechanisms. Biological thermoregulation drains vital resources, directing blood flow towards the skin and intensifying sweating to disperse the heat. This energy hijacking leaves the cortical areas unprotected, drastically reducing calculation and analysis capabilities.

Cognitive deficit measured by science

Empirical data collected on the population demonstrate that no one is immune to this phenomenon. Research published in the scientific journal PLOS Climate analyzed the impact of extreme temperatures on the brain’s executive functions, highlighting a clear slowdown in the speed of information processing.

The phenomenon clearly manifests itself through the loss of concentration, the onset of temporary memory lapses and a marked difficulty in impulse control. The scenario is worsened by cellular dehydration, which forces the nervous system to work overtime even to perform trivial tasks, and the deterioration of night rest, with an average loss of around an hour of sleep for each tropical night.

The vulnerability of mental health

The impact of climate change is not limited to mental fatigue, but profoundly alters emotional and biochemical balance. Prolonged exposure to the heat stimulates the production of cortisol and alters the transmission of crucial neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, the chemical messengers that regulate mood. This imbalance results in peaks of anxiety, aggression and irritability.

The consequences become critical for subjects suffering from pre-existing pathologies such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and dementia. There is also a silent danger linked to pharmacological therapies: many psychotropic drugs compromise the natural perception of thirst and inhibit sweating, exposing fragile patients to a very high risk of hyperthermia and heat stroke without there being real immediate awareness of it.
