You turn on the air conditioner to seek relief from the heat and, instead of fresh air, you see a cockroach flying from the vent: shiny, very fast and disgusting. It might seem like a surreal experience but unfortunately it can really happen. And several of my friends who live in Sicily have had this traumatizing experience. But how can this happen? And, above all, what can we do to prevent cockroaches and cockroaches from nesting in our air conditioners?!
Fortunately, in most cases the air conditioner is not infested. More simply, it can become an access point to the house if the system has some points at risk.
Why do cockroaches hide in the air conditioner?
Cockroaches are extremely adaptable insects. They can fit into cracks a few millimeters wide and move easily inside walls and false ceilings. The species that are most frequently encountered in Italian homes, such as Blattella germanica or the American periplanetthey are very skilled at exploiting any opening. Their flattened body allows them to squeeze into cracks just a few millimeters wide. For this reason they can also take advantage of the path created during the installation of the air conditioner. The most common reason is an imperfect sealing of the hole made in the wall to pass pipes, electrical cables and condensation drain. If small openings remain, cockroaches and cockroaches can pass through them and reach the internal unit of the air conditioner.
Another possible access route is the condensate drain pipe. If it ends outside or is connected to the sewer system without adequate protection, cockroaches can climb up it and reach the system. The external drive can also contribute to the problem. If it is located near accumulated leaves or other damp, sheltered places, it can become a temporary refuge for these insects, which subsequently find their way into the house.
Does the air conditioner attract cockroaches?
Not exactly. Cockroaches are not attracted to cold air, but seek dark, damp and protected environments to hide in. The air conditioner therefore becomes a simple point of passage, not the cause of their presence. If cockroaches also appear in your home in the kitchen, bathroom or near the drains, it is likely that the problem is a more extensive infestation and that the air conditioner is just one of the points from which the insects manage to escape.
How to avoid this unpleasant surprise
To reduce the risk it is important to carry out correct maintenance of the system. The first check concerns the sealing of the hole in the wall: there must be no cracks or free spaces around the pipes. The condensate drain should also be checked periodically to ensure that it is clean and, if possible, equipped with systems that prevent insects from climbing up. For example, you can use a net or you can recycle the round veil used for sugared almonds, tying it to the tube with a string.

It is also useful to regularly clean the air conditioner and keep the area around the outdoor unit tidy, eliminating dry leaves, cardboard and other materials that could provide shelter for cockroaches. If cockroaches are also spotted in other parts of the house, it is best to intervene immediately with a disinfestation, because these insects reproduce very quickly and the problem can worsen within a few weeks.
What to do if a cockroach comes out of the air conditioner
If it happens only once, it may be an isolated incident. However, it is worth checking the condition of the air conditioner and checking that there are no openings around the pipes. However, if the phenomenon repeats, it is advisable to have the system inspected by a technician, check the condensate drain and evaluate the presence of an infestation in the home. In these cases, eliminating the single insect is not enough: it is necessary to identify the point from which the cockroaches are entering.
