A wave of hatred steeped in sexism and misogyny has swept the internet, exposing the most brutal and insensitive side of digital platforms. The protagonist of this bitter story is Roberta Vallacchi, Lombard regional councilor of the Democratic Party. On Friday evening, politicians appeared on the stage of the Festa dell’Unità in Lodi to inaugurate the event and coordinate a debate focused on the 80th anniversary of women having the right to vote.
On her head she wore an elegant scarf, an accessory she had chosen since cancer treatment caused her to lose her hair. However, all this was enough to unleash the unjustified anger and gratuitous malice of the haters, ready to transform a moment of civil commitment into a target for offenses and insults.

The violence of the keyboards and the firm condemnation
The comments that appeared on the councilor’s profiles represent a cowardly attack that goes far beyond normal political dialectics, affecting the sphere of personal dignity and health. Phrases of disconcerting verbal violence have followed one another on social networks. In the uncontrolled flow of attacks, one user wrote: “Take it off, you suck.”
This attack demonstrates how digital anonymity and the lack of filters transform the internet into a parade ground where human frailty is trampled upon. The condemnation of those who hide behind a screen to denigrate those facing cancer must be inflexible: behavior of this type highlights a subculture of hate that institutions and civil society can no longer tolerate in any way.
The dignity of the councilor in the face of attacks
Faced with the gravity of the attacks, Roberta Vallacchi responded with firmness and composure, refusing to back down. Commenting on the incident, the dem councilor stated:
I think what happened is serious because it leads to a state of illness that has nothing to do with politics and breaks that network of solidarity and compassion which, in a transversal way, should be intrinsic to the community. The good news is that I am receiving many messages of solidarity from outraged people and this shows how much good there is in our society.
A clear position that highlights how the virtual fence allows cowards to vent personal frustrations, without however affecting those who defend authentic values. Vallacchi then added:
Social media offers the ideal place for those who want to hurl insults while hiding. But this does not scare, on the contrary, it pushes us to continue our commitment to women, especially those who find themselves facing the disease.
Political reactions and bipartisan solidarity
The seriousness of the episodes sparked an immediate and widespread response from the institutions, giving rise to a vast mobilization of support towards the councillor. The Democratic Party expressed a harsh stance, underlining the patriarchal nature of the incident:
Those comments demonstrate how deep-rooted a chauvinist culture is that reacts aggressively when women speak out and occupy public space..
The episode brought together bipartisan solidarity between the various political forces, united in rejecting a drift that undermines the fundamental principles of human respect. Yet another case that inevitably reopens the debate on the responsibility of online content and the need to protect public space from an aggression that mistakes suffering for a target to be shot down.
