Science explains what happens to the brain when we look at the sea and why it makes us feel better without ever getting bored

A wave rises, breaks, retreats. Then another comes along, similar enough to know what to expect and different enough to deserve a few more seconds of attention. It is one of the reasons why we can remain still in front of the sea much longer than we could in front of a wall. And blue space research is trying to understand what happens in those seemingly empty minutes.

A systematic map of the evidence published on EnvironmentalResearch collected 139 studies on the relationship between aquatic environments, mental health and well-being. As many as 94 concerned the coasts. The overall signal is favourable, but research is still too heterogeneous to establish which water works “better”, how long it takes or which characteristic alone produces the effect. Only six studies among those surveyed directly compared different types of blue spaces.

In short, no prescription for three walks on the seafront after meals. However, the sea seems to have an interesting combination: it moves continuously without constantly asking us to decide something.

The waves capture the attention without filling it to the brim

Computers, notifications, traffic, conversations, traffic lights, emails. For a good part of the day our attention is grabbed by the jacket by something that demands an answer. In front of the sea the scene changes: there is movement, there is noise, there is light that varies. Almost nothing, however, requires solving.

The so-called Attention Restoration Theorydeveloped by psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, has long described the soft fascination: some natural environments manage to spontaneously capture attention without engaging the voluntary attention used to concentrate on a task with the same intensity.

In July 2026 Richard Jagacinski, a psychologist at Ohio State University, proposed on Frontiers in Cognition a theoretical model that tries to make this mechanism more precise. The hypothesis is that large landscapes, slow rhythms and natural patterns can favor lower attentional frequencies. Examples include the distant view of the sea and the rhythm of the waves. It is a theoretical framework to be verified experimentally, so it would be premature to transform it into the definitive explanation of the fascination exerted by water.

One thing, however, works beautifully even without formulas: the next wave is never a photocopy of the previous one. Height, foam, reflections, wind change. The brain receives enough novelty to continue watching, without the barrage of information that comes from a screen.

The horizon also plays its part. The World Health Organization’s report on green and blue spaces identifies visual openness, the fluidity of water and the feeling of distance from daily demands among the appreciated characteristics of aquatic environments. The WHO speaks of an overall positive relationship with mental health, maintaining a wide margin of caution: the available studies do not allow a formula valid for anyone and anywhere.

After hours spent inside rectangles of a few centimeters or in front of walls a few meters from your eyes, finding yourself with kilometers of space in front of you still has a certain scenographic advantage.

The noise of the sea is noise, yet it can help us recover from stress

The waves are not silent. A storm surge can be deafening. Yet the natural soundscape has a different characteristic than the horn, the sudden braking or the vibrating phone: it tends to be continuous and relatively predictable.

An experiment conducted by Stockholm University on 40 participants compared recovery after a stressful task while listening to natural sounds and different environmental noises. Skin conductance, used as an indicator of sympathetic activation, tended to recover faster with nature sounds. Heart rate variability used to assess parasympathetic activity, however, showed no significant differences.

Another small experimental virtual reality study found signs of increased parasympathetic activation when related sounds were added to a natural virtual environment. Here too, the sample and experimental conditions require caution. These works suggest that a natural soundscape can contribute to recovery from stress; they do not authorize us to promise cortisol and blood pressure that plummet as soon as “the lapping of the waves” starts on Spotify.

Blue has something to do with it, but the sea is not a painted wall

Then there is the color. Blue is so often associated with calm that it has almost become an advertising shortcut. A great review posted on Psychonomic Bulletin & Review analyzed 132 studies, 42,266 participants and 64 countries: blue, green, green-blue and white were frequently associated with positive emotions and low arousal.

Association, however, does not mean automatic physiological effect. Brightness, saturation, context and culture modify the relationship between colors and emotions. And above all, the sea has the bad habit of not respecting the Pantone swatches: it goes from turquoise to green, from gray to silver and almost to black in the space of a few hours.

Reducing everything to “relax blue” would mean losing the interesting part. In front of the water, color, movement, apparent depth, sound and width of space change simultaneously.

Twenty minutes on the boardwalk can improve your mood, at least in a small experiment

One of the most concrete studies was conducted on the Barcelona seafront. 59 adult workers participated in a randomized crossover experiment: for twenty minutes they walked in a blue space, followed an urban route or remained at rest in the control site. Each person experienced different conditions.

After the walk along the coast, participants reported better well-being and mood than in the other conditions. On the cardiovascular side, however, the study did not reveal a specific benefit of seaside walking compared to urban walking.

It’s an important difference. Feeling better after twenty minutes on the coast is an interesting result in itself. Transforming it into cardiovascular therapy would only make the study more spectacular and less true.

Larger scale research adds another piece. In 2023 a study published in Scientific Reports analyzed 14,998 recreational visits to blue spaces in 18 countries. The reported well-being depended on a combination of the type and quality of the place, the characteristics of the visit and individual factors. Water, by itself, didn’t work like a switch. What mattered was what people did, where they were, and how they lived that experience.

And it is probably one of the reasons why separating the “sea effect” from the rest becomes complicated. On the beach we walk, swim, spend time outdoors, meet people, maybe leave the phone in the bag for half an hour. All variables that have the inelegant habit of appearing together.

Living near water is not enough: what matters is being able to reach it and experience it

Here blue spaces stop being just a postcard backdrop and become a question of the city, accessibility and environmental protection. The WHO already noted in its review that actual exposure to the coast showed stronger benefits than simple geographic proximity. Knowing that the sea is a kilometer away is of relatively little use if between the house and the water there are roads that are impossible to cross, privatized coasts or degraded areas.

Also an international analysis published on Scientific Reportsbased on 16,307 people in 18 countries, found associations between coastal neighborhoods and greater positive well-being; some of that relationship attenuated when recreational visits to natural environments were considered. In other words, what matters is being able to actually go there.

Then there is a small environmental paradox. If we attribute health and social value to coasts, rivers and lakes, the interest in making them accessible also increases. The study on almost 15 thousand visits warns that greater recreational demand can put pressure on the most fragile aquatic ecosystems. Human well-being and protection of places must therefore proceed together: an eroded, concreted, polluted or overcrowded beach loses many of the qualities we are trying to measure.

The 2026 research thus arrives at a less salable conclusion than a “sea therapy” and decidedly more useful: blue spaces show real potential for mental well-being, while dose, mechanisms and individual differences are still to be defined. A person can find a reassuring landscape in the waves; another may experience water with fear. A quiet coast and a beach crammed with umbrellas at 11am on August 15th technically share a lot of water, but the experience is a little less so.

The sea, meanwhile, continues to do something rather unusual in our day: it moves, changes, makes noise and does not ask us for a response. A wave arrives. Then another. The brain can afford, at least for a few minutes, not to chase everything else.
