Xiaomi brings the clothes airer to the ceiling: it dries up to 80 items and frees up space in the home

The open drying rack at home has a particular talent: it always manages to place itself exactly where you need to go. Xiaomi decided to solve the problem by using a space that normally remains empty, the ceiling. The new Mijia Smart Clothes Dryer 3 Max it comes down when you need to hang out the laundry and then comes back up, clearing the room again. Inside there are also hot air, sensors, lighting and even plasma, but the most useful idea remains decidedly more down to earth: remove the clothesline from the feet.

The system appeared on the Chinese platform Xiaomi Youpin and combines telescopic rods, motor, ventilation and hot air drying. The manufacturer declares a maximum capacity of 45 kilograms and space for approximately 80 items or two quilts. “Eighty items”, naturally, is a measurement that works better in technical data sheets than in front of the laundry basket: a t-shirt and a duvet have some differences in size.

The successful piece is the least “smart” one: using a space that normally remains empty

When closed, the main body protrudes from the ceiling for approximately 9 centimetres. The telescopic rod can reach 2.4 meters and is organized into five zones, while the movement is entrusted to a direct current motor and a 2 mm steel cable.

The height can also be adjusted via the app, along with operating times and schedules. Xiaomi expects, for example, that the clothes airer can automatically go down during the day and return towards the ceiling later.

For those who live in small apartments this is probably the most interesting function. The traditional drying rack in fact has an almost supernatural ability to always materialize in the exact point where you need to pass. Here at least the floor remains free.

Hot air up to 1,250 watts and a built-in ceiling light

Then inevitably comes the smart part. A 770 mm long nozzle can deliver up to 1,250 watts of hot air to speed up drying; 10 watt ventilation is also provided when there is no need to heat the air.

A 42-inch light panel has also been inserted into the structure, with an adjustable color temperature between 2,700 and 5,700 kelvin. In practice, the clothesline can also act as a ceiling light and automatically change the lighting by detecting the presence of people in the room.

Xiaomi also declares an antibacterial effectiveness of 99% for the drying net and adds a plasma treatment presented as a further sterilization system. Here it is worth stopping at the words of the manufacturer: these are performances declared by Xiaomi and in the available material there are no independent tests on the new model that would allow us to understand how much they really change everyday laundry.

Before looking for the drill: there isn’t one in Italy

The Mijia Smart Clothes Dryer 3 Max it is offered through Xiaomi Youpin crowdfunding at approximately 2,399 yuan 310 euros at the exchange rate of 14 September 2026.

And here the shopping list quickly ends: Xiaomi has not announced international distribution and the previous Mijia clothes airers remained products mainly intended for the Chinese market. At the moment, therefore, .

Between plasma, sensors and automation, the most convincing function remains the one that even a grandmother could have explained without opening an app: the laundry is on top and, when you’re done, it gets out of the way.
