Because it’s called the Harvest Moon
The full moon in September is called Harvest Moon when it is closest to the autumnal equinoxwhich is expected in 2026 September 23rd at 02.05 Italian time. This full moon, therefore, may not be in September, but it can also happen in October, as happened in 2020.
However, the name arises, as with many other full moons, from the American tradition: the natives, in particular those of the tribe of Algonquians, the most numerous, they called it that because of the great collection work which could also be prolonged at night under the light of the full moon, which was therefore much loved.
But this was not the only tribe, and in fact other traditions come alongside and sometimes overlap: this full moon is also called, for example, Corn Moonbecause one of the September products was corn.
How and when to admire the 2026 Harvest Moon

The moon will be full on September 26, technically at 6.48pm Italian time. But to admire it at its best we should wait for sunset (on the map sky of September 26, 2026 at approximately 9.00 pm).
We will have to look towards the horizon to the East – South-East, in the direction of constellation of Pisceswhere, with good binoculars (better a small telescope) and a clear sky, we can also admire Saturn. A double appointment therefore: the change of season marked by the equinox and one of the most fascinating full moons of the year.
