How to clean radiators: the viral (and brilliant) tricks to try immediately before turning them on

With the temperatures dropping and the first cold weather knocking on the door, radiators are once again the protagonists of our homes. But before turning them on and enjoying the warmth, there is a step that many tend to skip — and which really makes the difference: cleaning.

After months of inactivity, radiator fins accumulate layers of dust which, once the heat begins to circulate, end up directly in the air we breathe. A significant problem, especially for those suffering from allergies or seasonal rhinitis. And then, let’s face it, a clean radiator heats even better: the dust acts as an insulator and reduces thermal efficiency, with all due respect to the bill.

The good news? Cleaning radiators doesn’t have to be a chore. Indeed, with the right tricks – some discovered thanks to viral videos on TikTok, others rediscovered from time-honored wisdom – it can become almost fun. Almost. Here are the most effective and creative methods to try immediately.

Clean the radiator with the hairdryer

Yes, you read that right: the hairdryer. What you use every morning for your hair can become an unexpected ally for cleaning the radiator. The principle is very simple: the air jet pushes the dust out of the cracks, collecting it in a single point.

How to do it: Place a damp cloth or rag on the floor, directly under the radiator. Turn on the hairdryer and point it at the top and sides of the radiator, blowing air through the slots. The dust will fall onto the cloth, ready to be collected. Quick, painless, almost satisfying.

The knot method (with a simple cloth)

This trick is as basic as it is effective. All you need is a medium-sized wipe or cloth — preferably microfiber, which captures dust instead of simply moving it from one place to another.

Tie a knot in one end of the cloth and insert it into the upper part of the radiator, between the fins. Hold the other end and slide the cloth from top to bottom, along the entire length of the radiator. Repeat for each slot. Result? Dust collected, radiator clean, zero effort.

The jug method: water, vinegar and Marseille soap

This is the most complete method, perfect for a deep cleaning — perhaps to be done once a year, precisely in this period. You will need: a basin, 1 liter of hot water, a spoonful of Marseille soap flakes, half a glass of white vinegar, an old towel, a stick and a microfibre cloth.

Dissolve the soap flakes in hot water, add the vinegar and mix well. Place the towel under the radiator with the basin on top to catch the residue. Pour the mixture onto the radiator fins, then wrap the stick in the microfibre cloth and pass it between the slots. Dry everything with a clean cloth. Vinegar degreases, Marseille soap cleans deeply: an unbeatable, ecological and very low-cost duo.

The butterfly-shaped sponge

The most creative — and most visually satisfying — trick on the list. All you need is an old sponge, an elastic band or a sturdy rubber band, and a basin of water and Marseille soap.

Cut the sponge in half, then join the two halves in the center with the clamp: the result is a small soft “butterfly”, perfect for slipping into the cracks of the radiator. Dip it in the soap and water mixture, insert it between the fins and slide it from top to bottom. The two wings of the butterfly clean both sides of the gap at the same time. Brilliant, right?

Now you have no more excuses: before turning on the radiators, dedicate a few minutes to cleaning them. Your lungs (and your bill) will thank you. Happy cleaning!
