Montreal rises to the top of the world, at least for travelers. The Canadian city leads the ranking of the safest destinations for 2027 drawn up by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protectionan American travel insurance company. In one year it has gained fifteen positions: twelve months ago it was sixteenth.
How the ranking was born
The ranking is part of the twelfth annual report State of Travel Insurancepublished on October 28. We start from 38 cities, American and international, among the most frequented by American tourists. Over 1,500 interviewees were asked which ones they had visited, and only those who had actually been there could judge them on the various safety aspects. The responses were then cross-referenced with the Numbeo and Economist indices and with the GeoSure Global scores. The same company adds a clarification, namely that the photograph dates back to the August 2026 survey and does not take into account what is happening today.
Montreal, the danger is traffic
Montreal scores 82.18 points thanks to the low crime and very high ratings that GeoSure assigns to its neighborhoods. The real risk, according to the report, lies on the roads and in daily traffic: the city and the suburbs occupy both banks of the San Lorenzo and crossing the bridges to get to the center is a challenge. When there is work in progress, which is almost always, the complications multiply fivefold.
Nine European cities, Venice is eighth
Europe accounts for the lion’s share with nine out of fifteen cities. Zurich is second with 81.03 points (last year it was third): it has a conservative character, high prices that keep it quiet and clean and safe public transport. The only caveat concerns the franc, because euros and dollars are not accepted everywhere. Amsterdam rises to third place with 80.81 points and is judged “surprisingly” safe for a city where people mainly go to have fun. Reykjavik, first in 2026, slips to fifth, while Copenhagen falls from second to twelfth place.

Venice gains three positions and finishes eighth with 75.39 points. According to GeoSure data cited in the report, women are generally safe and medical care is within reach, although petty theft remains a problem. The advice to tourists concerns the glass: walking around the streets and canals while drunk is dangerous, and the fines for public drunkenness are steep.
