Gene Hackman and the great love for animals: on the set of a film he saved two stray dogs and decided to adopt one

Gene Hackman – found dead in the house in mysterious circumstances together with his wife and their dog – it was not only one of the most loved icons of cinema, but also a man with a big heart, especially when he was animals. The bond of the actor, who had a career dotted with successes and two Oscar prizes, with the dogs was deep and authentic, so much so that over the years he has repeatedly told how their presence was for him a source of comfort and serenity, especially after retiring from the scenes.

Not everyone knows that in 1999, during the filming of the film “The Replacements” In Baltimore, Gene Hackman noticed two stray dogs that wandered on the set -up and disoriented set and did not think twice about offering food and some pampering.

Together with Keanu Reeves, he decided to take them to the refuge Animal Rescue inc., aboard a limousine. In homage to the actors with a large heart, the two dogs (similar German shepherds) were renamed Gene and Keanu by the volunteers. A week later, there was the twist. Gene Hackman returned to the refuge together with his wife to adopt the stray that brought his name, giving him affection and a welcoming house.

After moving away from the spotlight in 2004, Gene Hackman had moved to New Mexico, choosing a quiet life, in contact with nature, in the name of writing and the company of his four -legged friends.

His love for dogs was a constant until the end: Hackman, in fact, was found dead in his home in Santa Fe, next to his wife Betsy Arakawa and his faithful dog, also lifeless. Now it will be up to the investigators to shed light on this drama.
