Femicide exists, it is a crime and is punished with life sentence, the green light of the Council of Ministers (but that’s not enough)

No, it is not a murder that “casually” has led to the death of a woman, it is a murder that led to the death of a person as a woman, led to fulfillment for a specific reason. What a no, it is not jealousy, it is not a “raptus” and not even a dispute ended badly. Is a femicidewhich from today is a crime with its distinct identity in the criminal codepunished with thelife imprisonment. The green light of the Council of Ministers arrived yesterday afternoon March 7.

Femicide and patriarchy

Defining a femicide is simple, identifying it as such not always, especially if a murder, already in itself a heinous crime, is communicated with motivations that often have nothing to do with reality, such as jealousy, raptus, quarrel ended badly.

How many times do we hear or read of murders caused by “too much love”, by depressed, abandoned men, who did not accept the end of a relationship? How many times we read about Women killed because they are victims of patriarchy?

The statistics are clear: from oneIstat survey of 2024it emerged that, in cases of murder in which the author discovered, 92.7% of deceased women are the victim of a mana share just less than that in which both parties involved are male (94.4%).

And no,.

From the investigation of Save the Children carried out in 2024 in collaboration with Ipsos And published in the relationship ‘The girls are okay?’ data emerge that make shiver:

Femicide is a distinct crime from the murder (but that’s not enough)

On the afternoon of yesterday March 7, the Council of Ministers approved a bill for theIntroduction of the crime of femicide and other regulatory interventions for the fight against violence against women and for the protection of victims.

The crime, which therefore now has a “distinct box” in our criminal system, is punished with life imprisonment, under penalty commissioned to

Anyone who causes the death of a woman when the fact is committed as an act of discrimination or hatred towards the offended person as a woman or to repress the exercise of his rights or freedoms or, in any case, the expression of his personality

The intervention also fits into the framework of the obligations assumed by Italy with the ratification of the Istanbul agreement and in line with the new Directive (EU) 1385/2024 on violence against womenas well as the directives regarding the protection of the victims of crime.

No, it is not enough, because what should be done is a significant investment addressed to cultural change: alongside punitive laws they should be introduced actions aimed at the prevention of crimes.

But theaffective education in Italian schools It is a mirage, while manual manuals are multiplying to regain your ex.

Because if almost one in three teenager thinks that a woman can help cause sexual violence and one in five thinks that a woman can refuse to have sex even if drunk (i.e. if she does it) we are really very bad. Of those teenagers maybe no one will kill (we wish us), but None of them will really change things.

The recognition of femicide as a crime is however a big step forward, because, finally, it confirms the name of something that with the “too much love” really has nothing to do. And that goes stopped before yesterday.
