A disappearing football shirt to raise awareness about global warming

The Marshall Islandsa small archipelago in the Pacific, face the devastating effects of the global warming. Sea level rise is threatening the very existence of these lands and their population.

To raise public awareness and promote concrete actions, the Marshall Islands Football Association (MISF)in collaboration with sports brand PlayerLayer, has created a sweater unique in the world: the “No-Home Jersey 2030”symbol of the fight against the climate emergency.

Created by designer Matías Otero, this shirt is not a simple item of clothing. The graphic details celebrate the culture and identity of the Marshall Islandsincorporating traditional symbols such as the outrigger canoe, plumeria flower and white shark, which represent the history and heritage of the Marshallese people.

“It represents a future in which we no longer have a home”

But that’s not all because the. is printed on the chest number 1.5to underline the urgency of containing global warming within this critical threshold. The slogan “We deserve to prosper”taken from a poem by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, summarizes the desire to survive and continue to exist.

To get the message across even further, there is a particularity of the shirt: its ability to progressively disappeara process that symbolizes the slow but inexorable disappearance of the Marshall Islands due to climate change.

Through a promotional campaign, the boss is observed gradually lose pieces: first the edges, then larger sections, until it becomes unrecognizable. This visual effect intends to impact the audience, forcing them to confront a dramatic reality.

The message is clear: just as the shirt vanishes, the Marshall Islands also risk being submerged if urgent action is not taken. Matt Webb, marketing director of MISF, explained that the “No-Home Jersey”represents a future in which we will no longer have a home” and that they hope this will push people to take action.

The campaign received great attention on social media, attracting curiosity and admiration for the powerful message conveyed through this garment. Available on the official MISF website, every shirt sold contributes to Fund the local football association and Marshall Islands environmental initiativeshelping to preserve an identity that risks disappearing together with its land. A visible and tangible symbol of a struggle that concerns us all.
