In a moment of strong tension marked by the soaring costs of petrol and diesel, an unprecedented institutional response comes from Southern Italy. The mayor of Reggio Calabria Francesco Cannizzaro has announced an extraordinary initiative aimed at alleviating the impact of price increases on family budgets. Thanks to a resolution approved by the municipal council on Friday 16 October, the capital of Reggio has made local public transport completely free for a period of 8 consecutive days, starting from Saturday 17 October.
The measure involves the entire bus fleet of the ATAM company, covering both the urban lines and the connections of the extra-urban lines in a widespread manner. The initiative positions the city of the Strait as the first municipality in Italy to adopt an intervention of this magnitude in the face of the national emergency of pump prices, positioning itself as a trailblazer on a national scale for the fight against energy inflation and the inconveniences of daily mobility.
Support for citizens and the turning point for sustainable mobility
The decision aims to offer an immediate breath of fresh air to an indistinct audience of users: students, workers, professionals and parents can travel on public transport without incurring any costs for tickets or season tickets. It is precisely here, as in many other areas of Southern Italy, that the heated protests of hauliers led by the Fedralog acronym are recorded, testifying to a crisis that is severely affecting the transport and logistics sector in the entire Calabria region.
In addition to representing direct economic support, the measure launched by the council led by Francesco Cannizzaro aims to trigger a change in habits that lasts over time. In fact, encouraging the use of buses allows us to reduce private car traffic, reduce polluting emissions and promote a model of sustainable urban mobility. A temporary intervention created to transform a critical phase into a virtuous opportunity for collective responsibility for the entire community.
