Appia Antica, a splendid (and very rare) mosaic from the Severan period has been brought to light

An extraordinary archaeological discovery occurred in Via Appia Antica 39in Rome, where a rare mosaic from the Severan perioddating back to between the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century AD. During an archaeological excavation part of an interdisciplinary project, archaeologists found a fragmentary mosaicbut with artistic elements of great interest.

Consisting of white tiles and blackpresents a fascinating mix of decorative motifs. In addition to the classic swirl patternstands out for geometric details in the shape of a double T that frame figured fields, and a rare frame decorated with semicircles.

This stylistic detail has allowed scholars to date the work to the Severan period, an era characterized by an evolution in Roman mosaic art. Although fragmentary, the mosaic represents an important testimony to the artistic taste of that period, in which the aesthetics of the Roman Empire reached a remarkable level of refinement.

This innovative approach aims to enhance the hidden treasures of history and promotes an immersive experience for visitors. In fact, every Saturday the site is open to the public through guided tours, offering citizens the opportunity to closely observe the work of archaeologists and the progress of the excavations.
