There are routes that are remembered for the effort, others for the views. The Argine degli Angeli remains in the memory for the unique sensation of pedaling suspended between water and sky. In the heart of the Po Delta Park, this cycle route crosses the Comacchio valleys with a route of approximately 5.4 kilometers that cuts through the lagoon like a thin ribbon of land.
On the right the Fossa di Porto Valley, on the left the Magnavacca Valley: the landscape is completely open and silence dominates every moment. There are no cars or urban noises. Only the sound of the wheels on the clear dirt road, the wind crossing the valleys and the flight of the water birds. Cycling here really does feel like you’re balancing on a thin line, with the water reflecting the light and creating luminous mirages that change every minute.
Because it is called Argine degli Angeli
The name is not accidental. According to tradition, this lagoon hill was frequented by large birds with light plumage, such as herons and spoonbills, whose white wings would have inspired the image of angels in flight. Today the magic remains intact: flocks of pink flamingos, black-winged stilts and seagulls accompany cyclists along the entire route.
In some places the embankment is so narrow that it feels like pedaling directly on the water. The afternoon light transforms the lagoon into a silvery mirror, while the reflections of the sky create an almost unreal atmosphere. It is one of those places where it comes naturally to slow down and let yourself be guided by the landscape.

Two starting options: Lido di Spina or Sant’Alberto
I have always dreamed of doing it, seeing photos and posts on social media that enhanced its beauty, and in the end I made this wish come true and everything was exactly as I imagined: exciting and spectacular. We chose to start from Lido di Spina, one of the simplest options to reach the embankment. From here you cycle between valleys and canals until you reach the dirt road that leads directly to the main route. The approach route alone is worth the trip, with flamingos visible from a distance and long straights immersed in nature.

Alternatively, as it is a long strip that you take on one side or the other (be careful, it’s not a ring so if you want to walk only along the Embankment you will then have to go back), you can start from Sant’Alberto, near Ravenna. In this case you cross the Reno river with the characteristic cable ferry and continue along a cycle route that runs along the Boscoforte peninsula.

A short but unforgettable trip
The most exciting moment comes when you meet the pink flamingos. There are often dozens, sometimes hundreds, motionless in the shallow water. Passing by bike a few meters from them is an experience that surprises every time. The route invites you not to pedal too hard: here it is not speed that counts, but the connection with nature.
The Argine degli Angeli is short, but its strength lies in its environment. In a few kilometers you cross one of the richest ecosystems in Italy, where fresh and brackish water coexist, creating a perfect habitat for birdwatching. Along the route you will notice fishermen’s houses, ancient workers and traces of the lagoon tradition.
When the sun begins to set, the water turns orange and purple and the sensation is that of pedaling inside a painting. It is at that moment that we understand why this cycle route is often defined as one of the most beautiful in Italy. A place where nature imposes its rhythm and invites you to stop, look and breathe.

Tips for traveling along the Argine degli Angeli
Some precautions for crossing the Embankment: it is not a difficult stretch at all, on the contrary, it is all flat and very suitable even for children. However, it is very narrow and can become very congested on weekends or during long weekends. It is therefore better to leave early in the morning, as we did, so as not to find great chaos and to be able to enjoy the ride to the fullest.
You also need to be attentive to the weather conditions: there is no shade, it is completely in the sun and in case of strong winds you are totally exposed so this can make cycling difficult. The compact gravel surface is passable with almost all bikes, even if MTB or gravel guarantee greater comfort.
Finally the opening hours. Access to the Argine degli Angeli is regulated by gates and the route is accessible from 20 March to 20 September from 7.30 to 20.00, while from 21 September to 19 March from 8.00 to 17.00. The Park Management Authority may establish unforeseen closures following intense rainfall events, needs related to fishing activity or other reasons.
