From the orbits of deep space to the hot and desolate lava fields of Hawaii, the Italian ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano successfully completed one of the toughest and most fascinating sporting trials on the planet: the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona. After spending a total of 366 days in space aboard the International Space Station and performing complex spacewalks, the explorer tackled the iconic route of the island of Hawaii, imposing his own pace through the 3.8 kilometers of swimming in the transparent waters of Kailua Bay, the 180 kilometers of cycling on the torrid Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway and the 42.195 kilometers of the final marathon.

In a 2026 edition historically marked by the return of the single final for men and women and won by professionals Vincent Luis and Taylor Knibb, Luca Parmitano demonstrated the same tenacity and meticulous preparation that characterize his work as an astronaut, taming the heat and treacherous winds to proudly cross the finish line of the world final.

The road to qualification: from the race in Texas to the 70.3 World Championship in Nice
The fulfillment of Kona’s dream represents the culmination of an exhilarating competitive season for the 50-year-old astronaut, who arrived on the starting line for the first time as a qualified finalist. The access pass to Hawaii had been won on the field during the Ironman Texas North American Championship, where Luca Parmitano had set his personal best by stopping the clock at a time of 9 hours, 50 minutes and 30 seconds.

An exceptional performance which guaranteed him a prestigious slot in his age category, repeating the qualification already obtained for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice. Already in 2014 the astronaut had competed in Hawaii as a brand ambassador, but winning the pass to the 2026 final on the field represented a truly personal gift for his fiftieth anniversary.
The preparation, the family and the method of the astronaut-athlete
Behind Luca Parmitano’s sporting successes there is a total overlap between astronaut training and the discipline of a triathlete. The intense training plan carried out in Texas saw the constant support of his wife Marta, passionate about CrossFit, and his family. With an almost obsessive approach to the use of technology and the improvement of aerodynamics, Luca Parmitano has transformed his body into a perfect machine, demonstrating that 100% commitment allows you to achieve any goal.
