An Atlantic cyclone has stopped over southern France, and from there is pushing warm southern currents towards the North-West, the Tyrrhenian regions and Sardinia. And it’s just the beginning: according to forecasts the worsening will be felt from Tuesday, and on Wednesday 21 October it will reach the entire country. For today, Monday 19th, the Department of Civil Protection has already assessed the yellow alert on sectors of six regions.
Where the yellow alert goes off
The national criticality bulletin indicates three types of risk, all of ordinary level, and Calabria is the only region that adds them all, including the hydraulic one, on the southern Tyrrhenian side and on the southern Ionian side. The storm warning also concerns Liguria, in the central and western sea basins and in the western Po Valley basins.
It also applies to Sardinia, in the Flumendosa-Flumineddu basins. At the same level, with the added hydrogeological risk, there are four areas of Sicily (the Tyrrhenian side with the Aeolian Islands, the two Ionian sides and that of the Strait of Sicily) and two of Tuscany: the islands, and the area of Fiora, Albegna, the coast and Giglio. Piedmont appears only for hydrogeological risk, on Scrivia, Toce, Val Sesia, Cervo and Chiusella, Belbo and Bormida. The measures on individual territories are the responsibility of the regional civil protection structures, which publish their own bulletins.
Today’s weather
The rains are concentrated in Liguria, Piedmont and Tuscany, where thunderstorms along the coast are not excluded in the morning. Some scattered showers are also expected in eastern Sardinia. A completely different story in the North-East and in the eastern Valpadana, given that clear skies are expected there, although fog could form at night and in the early hours of the day. In the rest of the Centre-South, stability and clear spells remain.
Tuesday wind, Wednesday rain everywhere
From tomorrow the worsening will be ready to spread, with strong winds and showers, and on Wednesday the bad weather will not spare any region. Autumn, it seems, decided to make up for lost time in just one week.
