In recent months LAV has committed itself to the release of animals subjected to testing procedures by the German multinational pharmaceutical company Aptuit, who operates in Verona and who is under investigation for mistreatment and unnecessary killing. In recent days we have returned to talking about the Beagles involved in this company’s experiments: what is happening?
LAV and the liberation of Beagles and non-human primates
Last June 25 between dogs and non-human primates they were seized and entrusted to Lav for their recovery since the Lazio regional administrative court had found serious illegitimacies committed in relation to the method of detention of the dogs as well as in relation to the qualification of the pain, the classification of the procedures and the practice of reuse.
Aptuit, Beagles and animal testing
However, Aptuit had lodged an appeal which was granted the “temporary approval” by the Council of State which allowed the resumption of trials at least until November 21st, the date of the next hearing.
And for this reason, 1,600 Beagles are now about to be tested by Aptuit.

Why does animal testing still exist?
Animals are subjected to testing if there are no other scientific approaches that can be used instead, and invasive tests must be performed with the use of anesthetics and analgesics to reduce pain, unless these do not interfere with the scientific results.
What is not clear is to what experiments the 1600 Beagles I am telling you about will be subjected to, and what will be the methods used and the purposes: given and considering the seizure in June, the accusations and the sentence of the Lazio regional administrative court.
There are around 600,000 animals used in Italian laboratories, as if around one in 10 Italians were locked up, deprived of their future and forced to undergo painful experiments.

Animal testing and human testing
A clarification must be made: the results obtained from tests on animals do not imply that the results on humans are the same, which is why clinical trials on humans are necessary for the approval of a drug, or any substance.
This is why in recent years new methods are being found that replace animals and are more effective.
But what happens to the Beagles used in the laboratory?
Only 0.01% of them are adopted by families or shelters, for the others the fate is death.
