Beaten by her partner, she asks for help with the Signal for Help: saved by motorists who call 112

A car journey transformed into a nightmare, an argument degenerated into violence and a silent gesture that avoided the worst. It happened on the night of May 22nd between the coastal road of Castellaneta and Massafra, in the province of Taranto, where a woman managed to save herself thanks to the Signal for Help, the international signal used by victims of domestic violence to ask for help without speaking.

According to what was reconstructed by the Carabinieri of the Radiomobile Division of the Massafra Company, the couple was returning after spending the afternoon on the coast when, along the SS100, a violent argument broke out. The man, a 32-year-old resident in the province of Bari, began to verbally and physically attack his partner, hitting her in the face and even preventing her from asking for help by taking away the cell phone with which she had attempted to contact 112.

The gesture that motorists recognized immediately

During a stop at a service area, the woman apparently found the courage to perform that movement now known throughout the world: hand raised, thumb folded in the palm and fingers closed on top. A quick gesture, almost invisible, but with a precise meaning. The occupants of another car recognized him immediately and understood that the woman was in danger.

It was precisely the readiness of passers-by that made the difference. After alerting the Single Emergency Number 112, they decided to follow the vehicle without losing sight of it, monitoring the couple’s movements until the patrols arrived. Shortly afterwards, according to the prosecution, the man would have taken an isolated farm road, where he would have attacked his partner again, grabbing her around the neck and threatening her with death.

The desperate escape and the intervention of the Carabinieri

In the most dramatic moment, the woman allegedly faked an illness to be able to free herself from her partner’s grip. A desperate but decisive move: taking advantage of that moment, she managed to get out of the car and take refuge in the car of the people who had understood her signal.

The arrival of the Carabinieri was immediate. The military blocked the 32-year-old and secured the victim, who was found in a strong state of shock and with obvious injuries to his face and neck. Transported to Castellaneta hospital, she was treated and judged recoverable in several days. The man, accused of persecutory acts, private violence and personal injury, was arrested red-handed and transferred to the Taranto prison.

Because knowing the Signal for Help can save lives

A story that brings to the center the importance of Signal for Help, born during the pandemic as a discreet tool for victims of domestic violence. A simple gesture, which requires no words and which can be done in the car, on a video call, on the street or in public places without attracting suspicion. Knowing how to recognize that signal means being able to intervene in time.

In this case, the difference was made by attentive citizens who did not ignore what they had seen. And it is precisely here that the value of collective awareness emerges: knowing these tools can really help to combat a social plague that continues to affect thousands of women every year. Even a small movement of the hand can change the ending of a story that risked turning into a tragedy.
