At the Bioparco in Rome a curious little snout is attracting glances and smartphones: a baby Bennett’s kangaroo has been born, one of the smallest specimens of its species. A few days ago he started leaning out of the pouch, making the first timid jumps and exploring the surrounding space, and then immediately taking refuge in his mother’s warm embrace. A scene that won over visitors and the web, with smiles and wonder. But behind the tender image lies a more complex reality: the little boy immediately became the object of public attention, observed, photographed, told. It doesn’t yet have a defined sex – impossible to establish at this stage – but it already has a precise role: that of attraction.

A birth included in a larger project
The cub was welcomed by a group already present in the facility: six adult kangaroos, who arrived months ago from a French zoo. According to the staff, the inclusion was positive and the balance of the group seems stable. And it doesn’t end here: there is a high probability that other births will take place soon, a sign of an expanding colony. From a biological point of view, the little one’s story is extraordinary. After a gestation of around 40 days, he came into the world weighing less than a gram, climbing independently to the pouch, where he remained attached to a breast for months. Only now does he begin to deal with the outside, while still remaining dependent on his mother for a long time.
Nature adapted to an artificial space
Bennett’s kangaroos are fascinating animals: they feed on grass, roots and fruits, they move slowly also leaning on their tail and, when they accelerate, they transform their body into a perfect system of elastic and balanced jumps. Males can reach 80 centimeters in height, making them larger than females. Yet, all this happens in a limited space. Not in the Australian wilderness, but in a controlled environment, where every behavior is observed and every movement occurs within precise boundaries.
Exciting scenes, but there’s much more behind it
It’s hard not to get caught up in the scene: a puppy discovering the world is always a powerful image. But here the world is already decided, delimited, constructed. This little kangaroo will live its entire life in captivity, without really knowing the natural habitat of its species. Its birth thus becomes an ambivalent symbol: on the one hand it celebrates biodiversity, on the other it raises questions about what it really means to protect an animal. Is it conservation or display? Meanwhile, the little one continues hopping, unaware of everything. And perhaps this is precisely the most delicate point: his innocence contrasts with a reality that deserves to be looked at with more careful eyes.
