In October we talked about the alarm raised by Que Choisir together with consumer associations and European car clubs, after some crash tests had highlighted serious problems in two child seats: the Britax Römer BABY-SAFE PRO, used with the Vario Base 5Z base, and the Axkid Minikid Core.
For the first model, during a frontal impact test, the harness buckle broke, causing the belts to open and the dummy to come out of the seat. A particularly worrying result, which had led experts to advise against using the product in the reclined configuration with the Isofix base.
Now the situation has an important sequel. Britax Römer has announced a voluntary recall of the BABY-SAFE PRO, providing consumers with a process to check if their car seat is affected and obtain a free solution.
Why the car seat was recalled
The critical issue concerns the seat belt buckle that holds the child inside the seat. In particular, when the BABY-SAFE PRO is mounted on the ISOFIX VARIO BASE 5Z in the most reclined position, in the event of a frontal collision the buckle could open or break.
The risk is that the child is no longer held correctly by the harness and could be thrown out of the seat, with potentially very serious consequences.
It is important to point out that the problem concerns a specific configuration: in the tests the failure did not occur with the seat in the upright position nor when it was installed directly with the car seat belt, without using the base.
The recall affects BABY-SAFE PRO products produced between December 26, 2025 and September 30, 2026, but not all examples manufactured in this range are affected. According to what was communicated by the company, in fact, the criticality can be traced back to the buckles belonging to a specific production batch. For this it is necessary to carry out an individual check through the system set up by the manufacturer.
The VARIO BASE 5Z base, however, is not affected by the recall.
Which child seats are recalled: codes and models
The provision concerns the BABY-SAFE PRO seat sold individually or in combination with the Isofix VARIO BASE 5Z base.
Here are the item numbers to check.

However, it is not enough to recognize the model or check the manufacturing period: to know for sure whether your seat is covered by the recall, you must also check the serial number.
How to check if your car seat is affected
To carry out the check, you need to locate the information on the white label at the bottom of the BABY-SAFE PRO body.
In particular, you need: the production date, indicated with the wording DOM or in the Y/M/D format and the serial number, shown on the white label. If there is a barcode, the number is in the white area below; in the absence of the barcode, it is indicated directly on the label which also shows the manufacturing date.

What to do if you have a recalled car seat
If the check shows that your BABY-SAFE PRO is affected, the first thing to do is to immediately stop using it in the reclined position on the VARIO BASE 5Z base.
While waiting for the repair or replacement to be carried out, Britax Römer indicates two alternative ways to continue using the seat:
In both cases, you must follow the instructions in the product user manual.
For the child seats actually involved, Britax Römer offers two options, both free:
The company takes care of all costs, including shipping, return and collection of the seat. To choose the desired solution and start the procedure you must register via the official page dedicated to the Britax Römer recall.

A final recommendation concerns those who have given, lent or sold their BABY-SAFE PRO: it is important to also notify the person who is using it, so that they can immediately check whether their item is among those affected by the recall.
