The calf that escaped from a slaughterhouse in Ciggiano, in the municipality of Civitella in Valdichiana (Arezzo), has been renamed Nino. Together with another specimen, the young bovine managed to escape shortly before being taken to the slaughterhouse, starting a desperate race towards freedom which went viral on social media in just a few hours.
Many citizens and associations are asking that Nino be spared and welcomed into a shelter.
The Network of Free Animal Sanctuaries, already known for having dealt with the case of the pig used for a prank in Porta Santo Spirito, has launched an urgent appeal for the calf to be saved and entrusted to one of the network’s structures. The animal rights associations of Arezzo immediately mobilized after learning that two calves destined for the slaughterhouse had managed to escape: one of them was unfortunately killed, while the other – Nino – is still on the run.
The Network of Sanctuaries has officially asked that the animal’s life be spared, declaring itself ready to welcome it. A gesture which, the activists underline, would represent a choice of humanity and respect towards a living being who is literally fighting to save itself.
ENPA Arezzo has also joined the appeal, inviting the veterinary and municipal authorities to show sensitivity and give the calf a second chance. The Cabbie Empty Association of Florence wrote a letter to the mayor of Monte San Savino asking that the possibility of entrusting Nino to a sanctuary be evaluated, instead of sending him back to the slaughterhouse.
The appeals continue to multiply online, with hundreds of comments and shares from citizens asking for only one thing: to save Nino, the calf on the run for his life.
