Celle Ligure bans the launching of balloons into the air to protect the environment and animals: fines of up to 500 euros

In Celle Ligure, in the province of Savona, the colored balloons will no longer fly in the sky. Mayor Marco Beltrame has signed an ordinance banning the use and release of balloons inflated with lighter-than-air gases, marking a decisive step in the fight against environmental pollution.

A concrete measure against invisible pollution

The ban arises from a precise motivation: balloons, once dispersed, turn into waste that is difficult to recover. According to international studies, fragments of latex and ribbons often end up in the sea or in the countryside, where they are ingested by marine and terrestrial animals. The consequences are often fatal. The ordinance does not limit itself to prohibiting the release, but also imposes technical rules to prevent the balloons from rising and dispersing into the environment. Anyone who does not comply with the provisions risks fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros.

“It’s not against children”: the mayor’s position

The mayor wanted to clarify the meaning of the decision, rejecting the most heated criticisms. The objective, he explained, is not to deprive the little ones of a symbol of celebration, but to promote greater environmental awareness. In fact, the openness remains towards alternative solutions: eco-compatible balloons are allowed, as long as they do not represent a risk for the ecosystem. The message is clear: fun must not have consequences for nature.

The support of the associations and the request for a national law

The measure received the support of several associations, including Plastic Free, which has long promoted campaigns against the release of balloons. According to the organization’s representatives, initiatives like this should become a national norm, to avoid them remaining isolated. The animal rights world also welcomed the decision, underlining how it is a concrete gesture for the protection of fauna. In fact, animals often mistake the fragments for food, ingesting them with lethal consequences.

A signal that goes beyond a single gesture

Celle Ligure, already involved in environmental projects, thus strengthens its path towards more sustainable management of the territory. The ban on balloons becomes a symbol of a broader approach, which aims to reduce the impact of human activities on the ecosystem. A choice which, beyond the controversy, opens up a bigger debate: how much are we willing to change our habits to protect the environment?
