Do you want to participate in excursions to observe the fireflies? It is the Luce project (which wants to study these magnificent creatures)

The light project (Lighting up the Understutoded But Charismatic Fireflies of Europe) aims to deepen the Study of the firefliesfascinating but still little studied insects, with a particular focus on Italian peninsulaone of the richest areas of biodiversity of these species.

In Italy there are about 20 species of firefliesmany of which are endemicand their correct identification is essential to guarantee it conservation. Italian species are still largely summarily describedand the use of molecular techniques such as DNA Barcoding It is crucial to confirm their classification and protect their existence.

Light has the aim of Improve access to taxonomic knowledgeby promoting the use of Barcoding DNA and supporting young researchers through activities of mentoring. In addition, the project wants to establish a connection between academic research and the dissemination of scientific informationguaranteeing greater understanding of the biodiversity of the fireflies in Italy and their habitats.

What the program provides

The project is financed through the Horizon Europe Grant Cascade and sees the participation of a consortium of entities, with the CNR-Iret and the Sant’Anna Superior School as leader. The duration expected for light is of 12 monthsduring which activities will be carried out data collection, training and sensitization of the population. The local communities he is Citizen Scientists They are invited to participate actively, contributing to the monitoring and protection of these species.

Italian fireflies are one of the most fascinating natural resources in the country, thanks to theirs bioluminescence which creates magical and suggestive scenes. However these creatures are threatened by factors like air pollution and the use of pesticideswhich compromise their natural habitats and their survival.

The Luce project aims to raise awareness of these risks and to promote the conservation of the fireflies through activities of environmental education. It also organizes events called “Lucciolate”where citizens can participate in excursions to observe the fireflies in naturestimulating greater ecological awareness.
