Dubai car free? The 93 km cycle path arrives, air-conditioned with the kinetic energy of those who pedal

Dubai Smart City is preparing to revolutionize urban mobility with The Loop, a visionary 93 km project that will connect the entire city with an elevated, air-conditioned and zero-emission cycle/pedestrian corridor. The aim is to make walking and cycling the main mode of travel by 2040, drastically reducing car use and transforming Dubai into one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.

An air-conditioned and sustainable tunnel

The corridor, approximately 30 meters wide and a dozen meters high, will offer a pleasant environment all year round, thanks to an air conditioning system designed for desert temperatures. Users will be able to move in total comfort along a ring that connects the main neighborhoods and services of the city, making schools, offices, sports facilities and cultural centers accessible in less than 20 minutes. This strategy fits into the philosophy of the “20 Minute City”, where every citizen can reach everything they need without using the car.

Kinetic energy and renewable sources

One of the most interesting innovations of The Loop is the use of kinetic energy produced by the footsteps of people walking along the track. The special floor, made with recycled tyres, is equipped with electromagnetic induction generators that transform the weight of footsteps into electrical energy. The tunnel will also exploit other renewable sources, a rainwater collection system and vertical farms for the production of zero-mile food, integrating sustainability and urban life.

Multifunctional spaces and well-being

In addition to mobility, The Loop will be a real green corridor for socializing and sport. Inside there are sports fields, fitness stations, hotels, wellness centers and shops, creating an environment that promotes health, social cohesion and quality of life. The initiative also aims to reduce traffic, air and noise pollution, while increasing residents’ physical activity.

A smarter and more resilient city

The project, conceived by Baharash Bagherian and the Urb studio, is part of the broader 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at making Dubai more livable and sustainable. The track will be integrated with public transport, while a dedicated app will motivate citizens to cycle and walk, rewarding travel and encouraging active participation in the new urban culture.
