Electronic waste, free collection of broken appliances is mandatory even without purchasing new products

Broken appliances: from now on we could also give them to retailers without the obligation to purchase new ones.

The newly approved Environment Decree introduces, among others, measures aimed at promoting the recovery of critical raw materials, such as rare earths and precious metals, through the recycling of electronic waste.

According to the new rules, in any case, household appliance retailers – including those who carry out teleshopping and online sales – will be obliged to inform consumers of the possibility of delivering small appliances that are out of use for free without being obliged to make a new purchase.

But be careful: the obligation is aimed at shops with a surface area of at least 400 square metres, while smaller retailers must offer the possibility of delivering small disused household appliances, such as blenders or electric scales.

Finally, the law provides for sanctions for those who do not comply with the new rules.
