An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 hit the territory of the province of Avellino today, at 2.40 pm. The epicenter was detected near Grottolella, at an estimated depth of 16.1 km. The shock was also clearly felt in the provinces of Naples, Salerno and Benevento. At the moment no material damage has been reported.
The Avellino area falls within a seismic danger zone considered to be medium-high (zone 2): events of significant magnitude cannot therefore be ruled out. Comparable earthquakes have occurred in the past, such as in December 2019, when tremors of magnitude 3.6 and 3.9 were recorded between Avellino and Benevento.

Today’s episode brought to mind the devastating earthquake of the 1980 Irpinia earthquake (magnitude ~6.9), which hit Campania and Basilicata causing victims, thousands of injured and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
Although no damage has been reported at the moment, some people in the affected areas rushed into the streets after feeling the tremor. As a precaution, the mayor of Grottolella has ordered the evacuation of the school buildings. The situation is being monitored.
