Four wolves in Trentino poisoned, we can’t take it anymore!

Poisoned: so they died four wolves in Trentinowhose bodies were found on Saturday 1 February. The news has spread the same province of Trento as well as, with understandable indignation, also the association ‘I’m not afraid of the wolf‘In a statement by joint signature also with WWF of Trentino, Enpa del Trentino, Lipu Trento section. We really can’t take it anymore!

What happened

The dynamic is not clear, we do not know if there has been a real clash or if the act, intentional, was carried out regardless. But in any case it is very serious.

Four wolves were found dead in the late morning of today north of Barco di Levico – the province of Trento wrote in the late afternoon of yesterday 1st February – the carcasses were located near the cycle path, on the hydrographic right of the Brenta river. They will be the analyzes, entrusted to the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie, to establish the cause of death. The hypothesis of the Trentino Forestry Corps is that it was a poisoning. For this one will start complaint against unknown persons

The hypothesis then seems to have been confirmed. And it leaves everyone dismayed, not only for the atrocity inflicted on the four animals, but also for the consequences that this deplorable practice can also lead to all ecosystems.

The consequences (not only for wolves)

The poisoning, in addition to causing the death of the animals directly affected, represents a threat to the entire food chain and for public health – in fact, the associations – the dispersion of poisonous substances in the environment can in fact have repercussions on other animal, domestic and wild species, as well as on human beings

To worsen things, the specific situation in the province of Trento, among other things not rarely theater of accidents, catches and killings of animals, including legalized ones. In fact, as the associations themselves explain, the Province, unlike other Alpine regions, does not have Anti-Velene dog nucleimodern indispensable tools to locate and remove any toxic baits or residues with precision.

The failure to establish these operating units represents a very serious gap which must be filled with the utmost urgency

A dangerous back march

The climate towards the wolves has also changed at an institutional level: the Committee of the parts of the Bern Conventioncardinal institution adopted in 1979 to protect wild flora and fauna (as well as their natural environment), has in fact decreed the downgrading of this species from “rigorously protected” to “protected”. And no, it’s not a detail at all.

As Greenme explained the polytologist and naturalist expert in biodiversity Valeria Barbibefore this decision the wolves they enjoyed total protection: they could not be killed, captured or disturbed in any way, especially during the mating or breeding of the puppies.

Article 9, however – specified the expert – provided for exceptions who regulated the hunting in the case of problematic individuals who could be dangerous for the human being or who had caused damage to breeders. This, in the event that other solutions were not effective and the population (wolves) was not in danger

The downgrading, which will see the wolf migrate from Annex II to Annex III of the Conventioncould have serious consequences.

With this passage, the exploitation of the species (we are clear, even the demolition) will be provincially will be able to put health at risk. States will be allowed to provide for annual withdrawal fees

In this way, the member countries may have greater freedom in authorizing the demolition of wolvesalso in derogation of current European directives.

In fact, we recall that the European Commission, in 2023, had recognized the importance of protect the wolf and to take prevention measures to reduce conflicts with human activitiesin particular with breeding.

How many other news does we have to write like this? How many other innocent animals will die out of ignorance e Failure to respect the most basic principles of man-animal coexistence?
