The first cinematographic film of game of Thrones finally has a title, albeit a temporary one. During Warner Bros’ presentation at CinemaCon 2026 – the annual film industry convention held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from April 13 to 16 – the studio announced that the project will be called Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. The film has been placed in the “2027 and beyond” slate, which means that a release date has not yet been set and that the title itself could change in the months or years to come.

The story of Aegon I Targaryen on the big screen
The few plot details released confirm that the film will follow Aegon I Targaryen, the original conqueror who unified the Seven Kingdoms and founded the dynasty at the center of the entire saga. The story is told in the novel Fire and Blood by George RR Martin and represents one of the most legendary episodes of the Westeros universe. The project had been anticipated as early as March 2026 by The Hollywood Reporter, which had reported the development of a film in parallel with a serial version for HBO — the latter, with the official announcement of the film, seems destined not to go forward.
The screenwriter and the format
The film will be written by Beau Willimon, best known for House of Cards and for collaboration on the series Andor. According to early rumors, the project is described internally as a “colossal-scale, Dune-esque” film — a large-scale cinematic event, certainly not a streaming window product.
The context: The Westeros universe expands
Aegon’s Conquest fits into a moment of strong expansion of the HBO television franchise, which has two series dedicated to Game of Thrones in production, House of the Dragon (the third season will arrive in June) e A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (the second season should be released in 2027). The transition to the big screen marks a strategic turning point for Warner Bros., which aims to transform the events set in Westeros into a film franchise as well as a television one.
