General strike called on 2 October 2026 against petrol increases and the cost of living: trains, schools and healthcare will stop, here are the times and sectors involved

Friday 2 October 2026 will be a day of possible disruption in various public and private sectors. In fact, a national multi-sector strike is planned, proclaimed by the CSLE, with the support of FI-SI, which will affect numerous categories of workers.

The mobilization may last up to 24 hours in the sectors involved, while for the railway sector the abstention from work will be limited to three hours, from 11am to 2pm. The official calendar of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport confirms the national strike for 2 October and the specific structure foreseen for the railways. Among the main demands underlying the protest are interventions against the increase in the cost of living, a reduction in the prices of fuel and basic necessities, a lower tax burden and wage increases.

Which sectors are joining the strike on October 2nd

The protest involves workers from the public and private sectors and concerns various sectors, among those affected include schools and education, healthcare, local authorities, metalworkers, agriculture and livestock, private security, the maritime sector and the railway sector. For most categories the strike is expected to last the whole day, although the methods and actual inconveniences may change based on the sector, territory and level of membership. For rail transport, however, a precise window of three hours is foreseen, from 11am to 2pm.

Train strike from 11am to 2pm

Those who have to travel by train on Friday will have to pay particular attention to the period between 11am and 2pm. The Ministry of Transport in fact indicates a three-hour abstention for the railway sector, rather than for the whole day. During the strike, cancellations, delays or changes to traffic may occur. Trenord has also warned passengers that the protest may have consequences on the railway service in Lombardy. For those who have to leave, it is therefore advisable to check the status of their train and the updated communications from the railway company before reaching the station.

Schools at risk of disruption for the whole day

The strike also concerns the Education and Research sector and may involve teaching staff and ATA for the entire day of October 2nd. Several educational institutions have already published communications to families specifying that, depending on membership, it may not be possible to guarantee the normal running of lessons or other school services. The situation may therefore vary from school to school: individual institutes will communicate any changes in timetables, postponed entries, early exits or difficulties in guaranteeing the planned activities.

Strike also in healthcare

The mobilization also affects healthcare personnel; the national strike on 2 October involves healthcare sector and management staff. The Bologna Local Health Authority, for example, lists among the categories involved nurses, social and healthcare workers, healthcare technicians, midwives, administrative and rehabilitation staff, as well as medical, healthcare and veterinary management.

As happens during strikes in the healthcare sector, essential public services and the minimum staffing quotas required by law must still be ensured. However, some non-urgent activities may be postponed or slowed down.

Why was the strike called for October 2nd?

At the center of the protest there are above all economic issues related to the cost of living, the demands indicated by the promoters include the reduction of petrol and food prices, a decrease in taxation and an increase in salaries.

The organizations also call for policies aimed at greater energy autonomy for the country and measures capable of supporting the growth of Italian companies. For Friday 2 October, therefore, the recommendation for those who have to use public services, go to school, travel by train or carry out non-urgent healthcare services is to check in advance any changes and communications released by the structures and companies involved.
