It all started in a rural area of Leno, in the Brescia area, when the owners reported the disappearance of a little goat. The animal had fallen into an old disused sewer pipe, ending up trapped about two and a half meters below ground level. The situation immediately appeared delicate: the tube, now unstable and unused, represented a risk both for the survival of the animal and for the safety of the rescuers. The intervention of the Brescia Fire Brigade was immediate.

The rescue device: USAR, GOS and controlled excavation
To deal with such a complex situation, a specialized device was activated with the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) team and the GOS (Special Operations Group). The teams began by creating an access trench, dug with the support of mechanical means. Before proceeding, the area was completely made safe: metal props and containment panels were installed to avoid subsidence of the ground which could have worsened the situation or further trapped the animal. Only after this preliminary phase did the rescuers use a search camera to precisely locate the position of the goat inside the tube.
The delicate recovery: controlled demolition of the duct
Once the animal had been located, the Fire Brigade had to face the most delicate part of the operation: direct access to the duct. To free the goat, the sewer pipe was partially demolished, operating with extreme caution to avoid further collapses. Each phase was slowed down and controlled, considering the fragility of the underground structure and the position of the animal, visibly frightened but still alive. The work required hours of continuous intervention, including excavations, structural checks and precision manual maneuvers.
Rescue and return to owners
At the end of the operations, the goat was finally safely extracted and brought back to the surface. The animal’s condition was found to be good, despite the long period spent trapped underground. After the initial checks, the goat was returned to its owners, who were able to hug it again after hours of apprehension. The intervention was concluded within a few hours, confirming once again the decisive role of the Fire Brigade also in animal rescue.
