Gran Sasso, an avalanche breaks out between Campo Imperatore and Fonte Cerreto: rescue operations begin

An avalanche broke off today on the L’Aquila side of the Gran Sasso, in the area of the Walloonslocated between Campo Imperatore and Fonte Cerreto, which houses the base of the cable car. Immediately after the event, ground teams from the Cnsas (Alpine Rescue) and the Guardia di Finanza intervened and were involved in patrolling the affected area. To support the work on the ground, a helicopter took off from L’Aquila to fly over the area, while an anti-avalanche dog unit was activated to ensure that no people were involved.

At the moment, there are no traces of people engaged in off-piste activities when the snow fell, but searches continue with great attention. The Civil Protection, through the Abruzzo Functional Centre, had already issued an orange alert (moderate criticality) for avalanche risk in the areas of Gran Sasso Est, Gran Sasso Ovest and Maiella, while an ordinary level of criticality (yellow alert) was reported for the other areas of the region.

Monitoring operations remain ongoing, with local authorities in close contact to ensure the safety of mountain areas and prevent possible new detachments.
