Have you prepared liquid detergent with Alga soap? Be careful how long you keep it

Preparing a liquid detergent at home starting from Alga soap is one of the most practical ways to use this soft potassium soap without having to handle the classic soft and sticky dough every time. The preparation is simple: the soap is dissolved in hot water and, once cooled, transferred to a clean bottle. The result is a liquid detergent that can be used for laundry or, when indicated, for some washable surfaces. However, there is one aspect that is often underestimated: how long can we keep it?

It’s not like an industrial detergent

The first mistake is considering homemade detergent exactly like a product purchased at the supermarket. A commercial detergent is formulated to maintain certain characteristics during the shelf life indicated by the manufacturer. A homemade preparation obtained simply by dissolving Alga soap and water, however, does not necessarily have a preservative system designed to guarantee a long shelf life. For this reason it is preferable not to prepare huge quantities and plan to keep them for months. Better to make a quantity proportionate to your consumption and finish it within a reasonable time.

Always check the smell, color and consistency

There is no absolute valid number of days for any home preparation, because it will depend on how it was prepared, the amount of water used, the cleanliness of the container and the conditions in which it is stored. It is therefore worth looking at the product before each use. If there are any noticeable changes in the smell, color or consistency compared to when it was prepared, it would be best to avoid continuing to use it without wondering why. The presence of unusual separations and very marked alterations should also be considered a signal not to be ignored.

The container matters more than you think

A dirty bottle and/or containing residues of another product is not the best choice. Before transferring the liquid detergent, the container should be clean and clearly identified, in order to avoid contamination and above all confusion with other liquids present in the house. It is also advisable to store it tightly closed and away from heat sources. Using a clear container can also make it easier to periodically check the appearance of the solution.

Better to prepare less, but more often

When you find a convenient recipe, it is natural to double, if not triple the doses immediately to have a large supply. In this case, however, it is not necessarily the most practical choice. Preparing smaller quantities allows you to consume the detergent more quickly, monitor its conditions better and avoid finding yourself with a bottle forgotten for months at the bottom of the cleaning cabinet. For anyone who uses Alga soap often, it could be much easier to prepare a new solution when the previous one is running out.

Don’t just rely on looks

A homemade detergent can seem perfectly normal even after having remained unused for a long time, which is why the best rule is not to necessarily wait for obvious signs of alteration to appear, but to take some precautions from the start: prepare small quantities, use clean containers, indicate what they contain and check the product regularly. Alga soap can also be very convenient in the liquid version, but preparing it at home also means giving up the preservation guarantees of an industrial formulation. The most sensible solution, therefore, is simple: better a little product, prepared when needed, than a large supply forgotten for months under the sink.
